Abstract
Disclosed is the use of agents and compositions that selectively inhibit the alternative complement pathway for the inhibiting or treating physiological damage resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), or related conditions. Preferred reagents for use in inhibition of damage resulting from TBI or SCI include those that inhibit factor B, with anti-factor B antibodies representing a particularly preferred agent.
Claims25
A method to reduce or prevent at least one symptom of physiological damage resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) in an animal, or enhance recovery from TBI or SCI in the animal, comprising selectively inhibiting the alternative complement pathway in an animal that has experienced TBI or SCI, respectively, wherein the step of inhibiting comprises administering to the animal an antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof which specifically binds to factor B, wherein the antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof prevents or inhibits factor B from binding to activated C3.
