Abstract
A microcircuit integrated cochlear electrode array and a process for the manufacture thereof, the electrode array comprising a multiconductor tail portion with longitudinally spaced outwardly exposed electrode receiving pads and a flat multiconductor head portion connected to the tail portion and having spaced outwardly exposed circuit attachment pads, the tail and head portions being laminated between a nonconductive film substrate and an insulating cover and the tail portion being helically wrapped into a helix with the electrode receiving circuit attachment pads exposed and carrying ring electrodes overmolded with a suitable polymeric material.
Claims17
A microcircuit integrated cochlear electrode array having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
- a flat multi-conductor tail portion having spaced electrode receiving pads on an exposed surface thereof and helically wrapped about the longitudinal axis;
- and
- ring electrodes carried by the helically wrapped tail portion, extending around the longitudinal axis and electrically connected to the electrode receiving pads on an electrode section of the helically wrapped tail portion, wherein a portion of the tail portion is unwrapped to define a lateral offset spaced from the longitudinal axis of the electrode section.
A microcircuit integrated cochlear electrode array having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
- a flat multi-conductor head portion comprising spaced outwardly exposed circuit attachment pads, wherein each of the circuit attachment pads comprise a slit adapted to receive a feedthrough post through the circuit attachment pad;
- a non-conductive film substrate;
- an insulating cover;
- a flat multi-conductor tail portion connected to the head portion and helically wrapped about the longitudinal axis, wherein the tail portion and the head portion are laminated between the non-conductive film substrate and the insulating cover, the tail portion comprising spaced electrode receiving pads extending around the longitudinal axis and wrapping around the insulating cover;
- and wherein a portion of the tail portion is unwrapped to define a lateral offset spaced from the longitudinal axis of the electrode section for a balance of the helically wrapped tail portion, the offset comprising a lumen passing through a center of the balance of the helically wrapped tail portion;
- ring electrodes carried by the helically wrapped tail portion, and extending around and electrically connected to the electrode receiving pads, wherein each of the ring electrodes comprise a hole aligned with an underlying electrode receiving pad;
- a laser weld joining a portion of the ring electrode within the hole to the underlying electrode receiving pad;
- and
- a silicone overmold disposed over the helically wrapped flat multi-conductor tail portion and head portion, wherein the silicone overmold comprises a silicone stand-off on an under side of the head portion and wherein the silicone overmold decreases in diameter as the silicone overmold approaches a first ring electrode.
