Abstract
Some aspects of the disclosure relate to a compression technique that can permit determining dynamically a satisfactory quantization matrix based at least on properties intrinsic to a digital object being compressed and a predetermined compression quality criterion, wherein the quantization matrix is associated with a specific space-domain-to-frequency-domain transforms. In one aspect, the compression technique can permit creation of a compressed digital object that can satisfy a predetermined a compression quality criterion.
Claims20
A method, comprising:
- determining, at a computing device, an image variation metric of a digital image;
- and
- providing, by the computing device, based at least on the image variation metric, a space-domain-to-frequency-domain transform quantization matrix for compression of the digital image.
A method, comprising:
- determining an image variation metric for each one of a first plurality of digital images, thereby yielding a first plurality of image variation metrics;
- quantizing each one of the first plurality of digital images according to a first plurality of quantization matrices for image compression, thereby yielding a plurality of quantized images respectively associated with the first plurality of digital images;
- restoring each one of the plurality of quantized images, thereby yielding a plurality of restored images respectively associated with the first plurality of digital images;
- determining a correlation coefficient among a digital image of the first plurality of digital images and a respective restored image of the plurality of restored images for each one of the first plurality of digital images;
- selecting from the first plurality of quantization matrices for image compression a second plurality of quantization matrices yielding a specified correlation coefficient;
- selecting from the first plurality of image variation metrics a second plurality of image variation metrics respectively associated with a second plurality of digital images of the first plurality of digital images, each one of the second plurality of digital images exhibiting the specified correlation coefficient in response to quantization according to each of the second plurality of quantization matrices;
- and
- determining a functional relationship among the second plurality of image variation metrics and a plurality of indices respectively associated with the second plurality of quantization matrices, each one of the plurality of indices conveying a number of frequencies retained in a respective quantization matrix.

- a memory having data and computer-executable instructions stored thereon;
- and
- a processor functionally coupled to the memory and configured, by the computer-executable instructions,
- to determine an image variation metric of a digital image;
- and
- to provide, based at least on the image variation metric, a space-domain-to-frequency-domain transform quantization matrix for compression of the digital image.
