Compositions and methods are directed to antimicrobial compositions and articles that release .NO from the composition and/or article in an amount effective to prevent gingival and other oral mucosal diseases.

A flexible film or sheet coated with a physiologically acceptable polymer comprising an encapsulated nitric oxide (.NO) releasing compound, wherein the physiologically acceptable polymer is insoluble in blood and comprises polyvinylchloride, and wherein the coating decomposes in the mouth of a patient and releases an amount of .NO effective to treat a microorganism promoted gingival disease.
