Abstract
Methods are provided for making halide-free quaternary ammonium salt monomers. Polymers prepared from the monomers and methods of using the polymers to clarify raw, untreated water or wastewater are also disclosed.
Claims8
A method for clarifying water comprising adding to said water a coagulant, said coagulant being polydiallyldimethylammonium acetate (PDADMOAC) prepared using a diallyldimethylammonium acetate (DADMOAC) monomer formed by:
- reacting diallyldimethylammonium chloride and an anion contributing metathesis agent in an aqueous solution to yield a precipitate and a diallyldimethylammonium anion, and removing said precipitate from said solution;
- wherein said anion contributing metathesis agent is potassium acetate and said precipitate is KCl.
