Abstract
The invention discloses an aqueous method of making polymer coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Nanoparticles made by the method are included in the invention.
Claims12
A composition comprising rod-shaped iron oxide nanoparticles coated with a crosslinked aminated biocompatible polymer, the nanoparticles having R2 relaxation of approximately 300 to approximately 400 mMs−1.
An aqueous method of making polymer coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles, the method comprising:
- (a) providing a mixture of iron salts in aqueous hydrochloric acid;
- (b) combining a solution of ammonium hydroxide with the mixture of (a) and stirring for a time sufficient for formation of a suspension of iron oxide nanoparticles;
- and
- (c) adding one or more aqueous biocompatible polymers to the suspension of (b), thereby coating the nanoparticles with polymer in the presence of unreacted reagents specified in (a) and (b);
- wherein the one or more aqueous biocompatible polymers comprise:
- (i) silicon;
- (ii) polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid, a silicon-based polymer, or a combination thereof;
- or
- (iii) tetraethylorthosilicate, 3-(aminopropyl) triethoxysilane, 3-(trihydroxysilyl) propylmethylphosphonate, or a combination thereof.
