System and method for transferring states between electronic devices

A non-transitory machine-readable medium in communication with at least one processor, the non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor of a machine, causes the machine to perform operations comprising:

• receiving an instruction to transfer a state of a first device to a second device;
• packaging information relating to the state of the first device in a file, the packaging of the information relating to the state of the first device including recording each application executing on the first device in a list maintained in the file, the list further including locations from which each of the applications may be downloaded;
• determining a type of connection to transfer the state of the device based on the connections available to the first device and the second device;
• and
• transferring the file containing information relating to state of the first device to the second device using the connection type, with the file, when processed by the second device, causing the second device to reproduce the state of the first device, reproducing the state of the first device including the second device downloading, from one or more of the locations, one or more of the applications based on a determination that the one or more of the applications are not installed on the second device, and installing the one or more of the applications on the second device.

A system comprising:

• at least one processor of a machine;
• a device state capture module implemented by the at least one processor and configured to:
• receive an instruction to transfer a state of a first device to a second device;
• and
• package information relating to the state of the first device in a file, the packaging of the information relating to the state of the first device including recording each application executing on the first device in a list maintained in the file, the list further including locations from which each of the applications may be downloaded;
• a connection manager module implemented by the at least one processor and configured to:
• determine a type of connection to transfer the state of the device based on the connections available to the first device and the second device;
• and
• cause the transfer of the file containing information relating to state of the first device to the second device using the connection type, with the file, when processed by the second device, causing the second device to reproduce the state of the first device, reproducing the state of the first device including the second device downloading, from one or more of the locations, one or more of the applications based on a determination that the one or more of the applications are not installed on the second device, and installing the one or more of the applications on the second device.
