Adaptive passive scanning and/or active probing techniques for mobile device positioning

An apparatus for use in a mobile device, the apparatus comprising:

• means for acquiring signals from a plurality of wireless transceivers;
• means for identifying each of said plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on one or more of said acquired signals;
• means for determining a received signal strength measurement for each of said plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on one or more of said acquired signals;
• means for selecting a subset of wireless transceivers of said plurality of wireless transceivers to receive a probe signal;
• and
• means for determining a transmission power of said probe signal to be transmitted to at least one of said subset of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on a comparison of received signal strength measurements for said subset of wireless transceivers.

A mobile device comprising:

• a processing unit to:
• identify each of a plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on one or more signals acquired from said plurality of wireless transceivers;
• determine a received signal strength measurement for each of said plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on at least one of said one or more signals acquired from said plurality of wireless transceivers;
• select a subset of wireless transceivers of said plurality of wireless transceivers to receive a probe signal;
• and
• determine a transmission power of said probe signal to be transmitted to at least one of said subset of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on a comparison of received signal strength measurements for said subset of wireless transceivers.

An article for use by a mobile device, the article comprising:

• a non-transitory computer readable medium having computer implementable instructions stored therein that are executable by a processing unit in said mobile device to:
• initiate acquisition of signals from a plurality of wireless transceivers;
• identify each of said plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on one or more of said acquired signals;
• determine a received signal strength measurement for each of said plurality of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on one or more of said acquired signals;
• select a subset of wireless transceivers of said plurality of wireless transceivers to receive a probe signal;
• and
• determine a transmission power of said probe signal to be transmitted to at least one of said subset of wireless transceivers based, at least in part, on a comparison of received signal strength measurements for said subset of wireless transceivers.
