Scalable feature descriptor extraction and matching method and system

A feature descriptor extracting apparatus, comprising:

• an image input unit configured to receive an image from which a feature descriptor will be extracted;
• a feature point and patch extractor configured to extract a point at which a change in a pixel statistical value of the image is large as a feature point, and extracting a patch centered on the feature point;
• a feature point patch statistic calculator configured to block-convert the patch and calculate a statistical value of each of a plurality of patch blocks;
• a morphological gradient calculator configured to calculate a morphological gradient by using a statistical value of the block-converted patch;
• and
• a feature descriptor extractor configured to extract a feature descriptor by using the morphological gradient in consideration of required feature descriptor complexity.
