Abstract
Systems and methods for assessing and optimizing virtual microscope slide image quality are provided. In order to determine whether any of multiple virtual slide images has an out of focus area and is therefore a candidate for manual inspection or rescanning, various focus points used to scan each virtual slide image are used to calculate a best fit surface for each virtual slide image. The best fit surface is then used to determine whether any of the various focus points are outliers. If it is determined that a virtual slide image is associated with outlying focus points, it is identified as a candidate for manual inspection or rescanning.
Claims18
A computer implemented method for real-time image quality optimization of a virtual microscope slide image, the method comprising:
- scanning a plurality of microscope slides by, for each microscope slide,
- acquiring a set of focus point values for a sample on the microscope slide,
- calculating a best fit surface from the set of focus point values,
- determining whether or not the set of focus point values comprises one or more outlying focus point values based on the best fit surface, and
- scanning the sample on the microscope slide using the best fit surface;
- and
- providing, on a single display, a visual representation of the scanned plurality of microscope slides to an operator, wherein the visual representation comprises an entire set of a plurality of virtual slide representations corresponding to two or more of the plurality of microscope slides, wherein each virtual slide representation comprises inscribed text which distinguishes any of the plurality of microscope slides for which it was determined that the set of focus point values for the sample on that microscope slide comprises one or more outlying focus point values that indicate a need for manual inspection.
A system for real-time image quality optimization of a virtual microscope slide image, the system comprising:
- a microscope slide scanning system;
- at least one hardware processor;
- and
- at least one executable software module that, when executed by the at least one hardware processor,
- acquires images of a plurality of microscope slides by, for each microscope slide,
- acquiring a set of focus point values for a sample on the microscope slide,
- calculating a best fit surface from the set of focus point values,
- determining whether or not the set of focus point values comprises one or more outlying focus point values based on the best fit surface, and
- controlling the microscope slide scanning system to scan the sample on the microscope slide using the best fit surface, and
- provides, on a single display, a visual representation of the plurality of microscope slides to an operator, wherein the visual representation comprises an entire set of a plurality of virtual slide representations corresponding to two or more of the plurality of microscope slides, wherein each virtual slide representation comprises inscribed text which distinguishes any of the plurality of microscope slides for which it was determined that the set of focus point values for the sample on that microscope slide comprises one or more outlying focus point values that indicate a need for manual inspection.
