Abstract
The present invention generally relates to orally administered pharmaceutical compositions of iron compounds with medium chain fatty acid salts. The invention further relates to methods of using the pharmaceutical compositions to treat iron deficiency and related disorders.
Claims42
A pharmaceutical composition comprising an iron compound, an absorption enhancer, wherein the absorption enhancer is a medium chain fatty acid salt having a carbon chain length of from about 4 to about 20 carbon atoms, and a solubilizer in an amount sufficient to increase the solubility of the iron compound and/or the absorption enhancer, wherein the solubilizer is present in an amount of about 2% to about 25% by weight, and wherein the composition does not involve chemical modification of the iron compound.
A pharmaceutical composition comprising an iron compound, an absorption enhancer, and a solubilizer in an amount sufficient to increase the solubility of the iron compound and/or the absorption enhancer, wherein the solubilizer is present in an amount of about 2% to about 25% by weight, and wherein the composition provides a bioavailability of iron that is at least 1.5 times greater than the bioavailability provided by a composition comprising ferrous sulfate that does not contain an absorption enhancer.
