Abstract
A heat transfer fluid created from nanoparticles that are dispersed into an ionic liquid is provided. Small volumes of nanoparticles are created from e.g., metals or metal oxides and/or alloys of such materials are dispersed into ionic liquids to create a heat transfer fluid. The nanoparticles can be dispersed directly into the ionic liquid during nanoparticle formation or the nanoparticles can be formed and then, in a subsequent step, dispersed into the ionic liquid using e.g., agitation.
Claims22
A heat transfer fluid, comprising:
- an ionic liquid comprising a cation having the following general formula:
- wherein Rn is an alkyl group of n carbon atoms and n is an integer ≧1;
- and
- nanoparticles dispersed in the ionic liquid, wherein the nanoparticles are made from one or more metals, inorganic metal oxides, or combinations thereof.
A heat transfer fluid, comprising:
- an ionic liquid;
- nanoparticles dispersed in the ionic liquid, wherein the nanoparticles are made from one or more metals, inorganic metal oxides, or combinations thereof, and
- wherein the ionic liquid comprises an anion having either of the following general formulas:
