Abstract
A system for shielding an aircraft from electromagnetic energy includes a fuselage, aperture, window mounting, and window plug. The fuselage provides an electrically conductive envelope. The aperture is disposed in the fuselage. The window mounting spans the aperture. The window plug spans the aperture. The window mounting and the window plug are electrically coupled to the fuselage and provide an electrical path spanning the aperture.
Claims21
A method of shielding an aperture in a fuselage of an aircraft from electromagnetic energy, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a window pane with an electromagnetically-reflective coating;
- providing a capacitive gasket mounted to a window mounting;
- conductively connecting the window mounting to the fuselage;
- reflecting electromagnetic energy using the electromagnetically-reflective coating on the window pane, the window pane remaining electrically isolated from the window mounting prior to the electromagnetic energy exceeding approximately 1 GHz;
- capacitively coupling the window pane to the window mounting using the capacitive gasket after the frequency of the electromagnetic energy reflected by the window pane exceeds approximately 1 GHz;
- and
- conductively connecting a window plug to the fuselage.
A method of shielding an aperture in a fuselage of an aircraft from electromagnetic energy, the method comprising the steps of:
- coating a window pane with an electrically conductive film;
- connecting a window mounting to the fuselage including the steps of:
- coupling capacitively the window pane to a window forging;
- connecting conductively the window forging to the fuselage;
- and
- connecting a window plug to the window mounting including the steps of:
- connecting conductively a bellows seal to the window forging;
- and
- connecting conductively an electronically dimmable window to the bellows seal.
A method of shielding an aperture in a fuselage from electromagnetic energy, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a capacitive gasket mounted to a window forging;
- providing a window pane;
- treating the window pane with an electromagnetically-reflective coating for attenuating the propagation of electromagnetic radiation;
- reflecting electromagnetic energy using the electromagnetically-reflective coating on the window pane, the window pane remaining electrically isolated from the window forging prior to the electromagnetic energy reaching a predetermined maximum;
- capacitively coupling the window pane to the window forging using the capacitive gasket after the electromagnetic energy attenuated by the window pane reaches the predetermined maximum;
- conductively connecting the window forging to the fuselage;
- and
- conductively connecting an electronically dimmable window to the window forging.
A method of shielding an aperture in a fuselage from electromagnetic energy, the method comprising the steps of:
- treating a window pane with a material for attenuating the propagation of electromagnetic radiation;
- coupling capacitively the window pane to a window forging;
- connecting conductively the window forging to the fuselage;
- and
- connecting conductively an electronically dimmable window to the window forging including the steps of:
- connecting conductively a bellows seal to the window forging;
- and
- connecting conductively the electronically dimmable window to the bellows seal.
A method of shielding an aperture in a fuselage from electromagnetic energy, the method comprising the steps of:
- coating a window pane with a material for attenuating the propagation of electromagnetic radiation;
- connecting conductively the window pane to a gasket;
- connecting conductively the gasket to a window forging;
- connecting conductively the window forging to the fuselage;
- coating a bellows seal with conductive material;
- connecting conductively the bellows seal to the window forging;
- and
- bonding a circumference of an electronically dimmable window to the bellows seal.
