Abstract
The present disclosure relates to a system and method for selecting a network for use by a communication device to process a data transmission. In the method, the following actions are conducted: tracking transmission characteristics of networks used by the device; maintaining a set of options for the device relating to the networks, including at least one option based on the transmission characteristics; utilizing a selected option identify a selected network to process the data transmission by the communication device; and processing the data transmission using the selected network.
Claims14
A method for selecting a network from a plurality of networks that includes at least a cellular network and a Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) network for use by a communication device to process an outbound email as a data transmission, the method comprising:
- upon activation of a command to send the outbound email from the communication device, evaluating transmission characteristics of each network of the plurality of networks for the outbound email;
- when at least two networks of the plurality of networks are available to the communication device
- determining whether a total amount of data sent by the communication device over a time period through a first network of the at least two networks has reached a data limit;
- and
- when the amount of data has reached the data limit
- identifying a second network from the at least two networks for processing the outbound email;
- and
- transmitting the outbound email from the communication device using the second network.
A communication device having communication capabilities with a plurality of networks including at least a cellular network and a Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) network, the communication device comprising:
- a microprocessor;
- a display;
- memory;
- a communication subsystem to process an outbound email sent from the communication device through the plurality of networks;
- a first module to track a plurality of transmission characteristics of the plurality of networks and to store results in the memory;
- and
- a second module to
- determine whether a total amount of data sent by the communication device over a time period through a first network of at least two networks of the plurality of networks has reached a data limit;
- and
- when the amount of data has reached the data limit,
- identify a second network from the at least two networks for processing the outbound email;
- and
- transmit the outbound email from the communication device using the second network.
