Abstract
The present invention relates to a plant, which is resistant to a pathogen of viral, bacterial, fungal or oomycete origin, wherein the plant has an increased homoserine level as compared to a plant that is not resistant to the said pathogen, in particular organisms of the phylum Oomycota. The invention further relates to a method for obtaining a plant, which is resistant to a pathogen of viral, bacterial, fungal or oomycete origin, comprising increasing the endogenous homoserine level in the plant.
Claims6
An isolated plant which is resistant to a pathogen, wherein the plant has an increased endogenous L-homoserine level as compared to a plant that is not resistant to said pathogen, wherein said plant is selected from the group consisting of potato, soybean, rice, and maize, and
- wherein when said plant is potato and said pathogen is Phytophthora infestans, said potato plant has a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 87 or SEQ ID NO:
- 90;
- wherein when said plant is soybean and said pathogen is Phytophthora sojae, said soybean plant has a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 94;
- wherein when said plant is rice and said pathogen is Sclerospora, said rice plant has a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 98;
- and
- wherein when said plant is maize and said pathogen is Peronosclerospora, said maize plant has a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 97.
A method for obtaining a plant which is resistant to a pathogen, wherein the plant has an increased endogenous L-homoserine level as compared to a plant that is not resistant to said pathogen, wherein said plant is selected from the group consisting of potato, soybean, rice and maize, the method comprising:
- increasing the endogenous L-homoserine level in a potato plant by a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene, thus lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 87 or SEQ ID NO:
- 90 to produce a potato plant which is resistant to Phytophthora infestans;
- or
- increasing the endogenous L-homoserine level in a soybean plant by a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene, thus lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 94 to produce a soybean plant which is resistant to Phytophthora sojae;
- or
- increasing the endogenous L-homoserine level in a rice plant by a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene, thus lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 98 to produce a rice plant which is resistant to Sclerospora;
- or
- increasing the endogenous L-homoserine level in a maize plant by a mutation in its homoserine kinase gene, thus lowering the homoserine kinase activity of SEQ ID NO:
- 97 to produce a maize plant which is resistant to Peronosclerospora.
