Abstract
A process of oxidizing primary alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes is disclosed. The process is effected in the presence of noble metal polyoxometalate complexes. A novel process for preparing noble metal polyoxometalate complexes, and novel noble metal polyoxometalate complexes are also disclosed.

A process of oxidizing a primary alcohol to a corresponding aldehyde, the process comprising mixing the primary alcohol with a noble metal-polyoxometalate complex (NM-POM), thereby obtaining the aldehyde, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of palladium and platinum.
A process of oxidizing a primary alcohol to a corresponding aldehyde, the process comprising mixing the primary alcohol with a noble metal-polyoxometalate complex (NM-POM), thereby obtaining the aldehyde, wherein the aldehyde constitutes at least 80 mol percents of the products obtained upon said mixing.
A process of preparing a noble metal-polyoxometalate complex (NM-POM) having a general Formula I:
- Q+q[Xa(NM)dLgMmOz]q- Formula I
- and any solvate and hydrate thereof,
- wherein:
- X is selected from the group consisting of a main group element, H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, a transition metal or any combination thereof;
- a is 0 or an integer from 1 to 6;
- NM is a noble metal selected from the group consisting of palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, silver, osmium, iridium, platinum and gold;
- d is an integer from 1 to 10;
- L is a ligand selected from the group consisting of H2O, halide, oxygen, hydroxyl, DMSO, sulphoxide, cyanide, cyanate, thiocyanate, amine, heteroaryl, heteroalicyclic and any combination thereof;
- g an integer from 1 to 10;
- M is selected from the group consisting of tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), niobium (Nb) or vanadium (V) or any combination thereof;
- m is an integer from 4 to 100;
- O is oxygen;
- z in an integer from 5 to 400;
- Q is a counter-cation selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal cation, an alkaline earth metal cation, a transition metal cation, an organic cation, a substituted or unsubstituted quaternary ammonium cation, a phosphonium cation, an arsenium cation and any combination thereof;
- and
- q is an integer from 1 to 100,
- the process comprising:
- mixing an NM[(CH3)2SO]2Cl2 salt with a solution of a first complex having the general formula III:
- Qq[XaLgMmOz]q- Formula III
- thereby obtaining the NM-POM complex.
A noble metal-polyoxometalate complex being (C16H33(CH3)3N+)12[Zn5(H2O)2PdCl2W19O68].
