A derivatized polygalactomannan reaction product comprising a water soluble fraction and a water insoluble fraction of from about 0.4 to about 3 wt %, wherein the water insoluble fraction comprises greater than 10 wt % protein components, and wherein the derivatized polygalactomannan reaction product comprises the products of reaction of polygalactomannan, a cationic derivatizing agent, an oxidizing agent, and at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of an anionic surfactant, nonionic surfactant, and combinations thereof in a caustic aqueous solution, and wherein the derivatized polygalactomannan reaction product has:
- i) a clarity of less than 60% light transmittance measured at a wavelength of 600 nm far when placed in an aqueous solution comprising 1 wt % of the derivatized polygalactomannan reaction product;
- and
- ii) a clarity of greater than 80% light transmittance at a wavelength of 600 nm when placed in a surfactant system comprising 12 wt % sodium laureth sulfate, 2 wt % cocamidopropyl betaine, 1 wt % sodium chloride, and 0.2 wt % of the derivatized polygalactomannan reaction product.
