## Abstract

A method for user interaction with a three-dimensional virtual world is disclosed. The virtual world comprises one or more public spaces and one or more private spaces. A user may be represented in the virtual world by an avatar. The user can manipulate the avatar via a user interface. According to the method a custom gesture may be generated for the avatar. The gesture may be associated with one or more user interface signals.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for user interaction with a three-dimensional world, wherein the user is represented in the virtual world by an avatar, wherein the user can manipulate the avatar via a user interface, the method comprising:
generating a custom gesture for the avatar, wherein the user generates the custom gesture using motion capture or performance capture of the user performing the gesture;
associating the gesture with one or more user interface signals, wherein the avatar performs the custom gesture upon an occurrence of the one or more user interface signals;
storing the one or more user interface signals;
distributing the stored user interface signals to one or more other users; and
using the one or more stored user interface signals associated with the custom gesture to communicate a real-time internal emotional state of the user as external emotion exhibited by the avatar, wherein communicating the real-time internal emotional state of the user comprises determining an emotional state of the user by simultaneously capturing facial features and body language of the user in one or more visual images of the user during a video communication using a 3D camera and analyzing one or more facial features and body language features of the user in the one or more images to determine the internal emotional state of the user; and causing images of the avatar performing the custom gesture to be presented using the one or more stored user interface signals associated with the custom gesture in response to determination of a particular internal emotional state in the user that corresponds to the custom gesture;
wherein the body language features include the user's stance or placement of the user's arms or hands.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising moderating the custom gesture in the virtual world.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein moderating the custom gesture includes restricting an ability of a particular user to make an avatar perform the custom gesture or an ability of the particular user to perceive the avatar performing the custom gesture based on predetermined criteria.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein the predetermined criteria include an age of the user, the age of a viewer of the gesture or a sensitivity of the viewer to offense base based on religious, ethnic, or affiliation of the viewer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising customizing one or more other features of the avatar to identify the user and/or avatar with a particular social group.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5 wherein customizing one or more other features of the avatar includes customizing the avatar's clothing, footwear, hairstyles or ethnic characteristics.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein detecting the emotional state of the user comprises analyzing a voice stress of the user.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein detecting the emotional state of the user comprises analyzing biometric data indicative of the user's emotional state during a user portion of the video communication.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8 wherein the biometric data comprises electrocardiographic (EKG), electroencephalographic (EEG), galvanic skin response, or thermal imaging data.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein detecting the emotional state of the user comprises tracking an emotional state of the user in real time during a user portion of the video communication.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein exhibiting the real-time internal emotional state of the user as external emotion exhibited by the avatar includes causing images of the avatar performing the custom gesture to be presented on a device of another user in response to detection of a particular internal emotional state in the user.
