## Abstract

A point of sale tax reporting system including a smart tax register located at a retailer location. The retailer smart register processes consumer transactions and calculates the amount of sales tax due the retailer by the consumer for each transaction. After the sales tax is paid to the retailer by the consumer, the register either immediately or periodically forwards the amount of the transaction and the amount of sales tax collected by the retailer to a computer and memory located at a remote location, such as a state government taxing authority.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A point of sale tax reporting system in an environment where a consumer purchases goods, the point of sale tax reporting system comprising:
at least one tax register located at a merchant or retailer location, the at least one tax register being configured to process consumer sales transaction data at the retailer location and computing use tax data to be paid to an appropriate state agency based upon at least one of the location of the consumer and where purchased goods are to be shipped, the at least one tax register being further configured to forward the transaction data and the use tax data to one of the state agency and a credit card processing company for processing, the purchased goods being purchased with at least one of a credit card, a debit card, and any form of electronic payment, the at least one tax register being further configured to issue a tax stamp receipt to the consumer as evidence of tax paid for attachment to a parcel;
a first computer and a corresponding first memory disposed at the state agency, the first computer and the first memory being configured to receive and store the use tax data from one of the credit card processing company and a merchant at the retailer location; and
a first communication link connecting the at least one tax register at the retailer location to the first computer and the first memory at the state agency, the first communication link permitting the at least one tax register to directly or indirectly forward the use tax data to the first computer and the first memory whereby the use tax data from the retailer location is automatically forwarded to the state agency and stored in the first memory in order to help enforce tax laws and prevent consumers or merchants from avoiding the payment of use tax.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The point of sale tax reporting system of claim 1, wherein the first communication link is one of a digital packet switched network and a satellite network.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The point of sale tax reporting system of claim 1, wherein the at least one tax register is further configured to access a credit card company in response to the transaction so that the credit card company automatically charges the consumer's credit card with both a sales price and a use tax based upon a destination to which the consumer requests that the purchased goods be shipped.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The point of sale tax reporting system of claim 3, the credit card company including a processor configured to forward the use tax charged to the consumer to the state agency whereby the use tax, where appropriate, is automatically charged to the consumer, the use tax including sales tax.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The point of sale tax reporting system of claim 1, further including a digital data network provided so as to connect the retailer location to a consumer location where the consumer is positioned, the digital data network for allowing the consumer to purchase goods from a retailer via the digital data network.
