## Abstract

A method for allocating paging areas includes: determining a basic paging area currently visited by a User Equipment (UE); and allocating a paging area to this UE according to a history record of motion trace of UEs located in the basic paging area currently visited by this UE. An apparatus for allocating paging areas is disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for allocating a paging area for a User Equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system, comprising:
determining a first basic paging area currently visited by a first UE in the wireless communication system, wherein the first basic paging area defines a wireless coverage area; and
allocating a paging area to the first UE according to a history record that defines a motion trace of a plurality of UEs that are located in the first basic paging area, wherein the paging area comprises a plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the determining the first basic paging area currently visited by the first UE comprises:
receiving an identifier (ID) of the first basic paging area from the first UE or a Radio Access Network (RAN).

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The according to claim 1, wherein:
the history record comprises information indicating times of the plurality of UEs in the first basic paging area moving to other basic paging areas in each unit of time within a specific period.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein:
the history record comprises: actual number of motions of the plurality of UEs from the first basic paging area currently visited by the first UE to basic paging areas adjacent to the first basic paging area, or a result obtained after a scale factor is applied to the actual number of motions.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method according to claim 4, wherein:
if the scale factor is less than 1, the actual number of motions corresponding to the adjacent basic paging areas inside the paging area allocated to the plurality of UEs is divided by the scale factor, or the actual number of motions corresponding to the adjacent basic paging areas outside the paging areas allocated to the plurality of UEs located in first basic paging area is multiplied by the scale factor.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein:
the plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record comprise multiple continuous adjacent basic paging areas, and the multiple continuous adjacent basic paging areas are a result of prediction performed according to the history record.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, wherein:
the number of multiple continuous basic paging areas depends on at least one of user type, property of basic paging area, time segment, and motion speed of the first UE.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record comprise basic paging areas visited by the plurality of UEs before the plurality of UEs enter into the first basic paging area, and basic paging areas visited by the plurality of UEs after the plurality of UEs left the first basic paging area.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of UEs include the first UE.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method according to claim 9, wherein the plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record include the first basic paging area.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the first basic paging area and the plurality of basic paging areas are tracking areas in an Evolved Packet System (EPS).

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein the method is performed by a Mobility Management Entity (MME) in the EPS.

### Claim 13

An apparatus for allocating a paging area for a User Equipment (UE) in a wireless communication network, comprising:
a processor; and
a memory coupled to the processor and having computer executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
determine a first basic paging area currently visited by a first UE in the wireless communication network, wherein the first paging area defines a wireless coverage area; and
allocating a paging area to the first UE according to a history record that defines a motion trace of a plurality of UEs that are located in the first paging area, wherein the paging area comprises a plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record comprise basic paging areas visited by the plurality of UEs before the plurality of UEs enter into the first basic paging area, and basic paging areas visited by the plurality of UEs after the plurality of UEs left the first basic paging area.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the plurality of UEs include the first UE.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the plurality of basic paging areas identified in the history record include the first basic paging area.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein the first basic paging area and the plurality of basic paging areas are tracking areas in an Evolved Packet System (EPS).

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the apparatus is a Mobility Management Entity (MME) in the EPS.
