## Abstract

A signal to be transmitted from a terminal via a channel in a communication network is encoded by receiving the signal at the terminal; determining characteristics of the channel; encoding a first portion of the signal in accordance with a first encoding method to produce a first encoded signal portion; and encoding a second portion of the signal in accordance with a second encoding method to produce a second encoded signal portion. The first portion of the signal is encoded in accordance with the first encoding method depending on the determined characteristics of the channel. The first encoded signal portion and the second encoded signal portion are transmitted via the channel.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
determining characteristics of a channel over which a signal is to be transmitted;
encoding a first frequency portion of the signal using a first encoding method to produce a first encoded signal portion, the first frequency portion of the signal comprising a proportion of the signal that is calculated based on the determined characteristics of the channel, the calculated proportion being relatively higher when the determined characteristics of the channel indicate poor channel conditions than when the determined characteristics of the channel indicate good channel conditions, the first encoding method comprising a model based parametric encoding method;
encoding a second frequency portion of the signal using a second encoding method to produce a second encoded signal portion, the second encoding method comprising a high quality non-model based encoding method, the second frequency portion of the channel comprising a remaining frequency portion of the channel that is not encoded by the first encoding method; and
transmitting the first encoded signal portion and the second encoded signal portion via the channel.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is defined by at least one cut off frequency, and wherein the at least one cut off frequency is configured to be adjusted to be inversely proportional to available bandwidth of the channel.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is defined by at least one cut off frequency, and wherein the at least one cut off frequency is configured to be adjusted to be proportional to a measure of packet loss and a measure of jitter.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is defined by at least one cut off frequency, and wherein the at least one cut of frequency is configured to be adjusted to be proportional to a channel degradation indicator value.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the channel degradation indicator value is determined from at least one of a measure of packet loss, a measure of jitter, or a measure of bandwidth of the channel.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the second frequency portion of the signal based on the first frequency portion of the signal.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is not encoded using the first encoding method.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the characteristics of the channel correspond to at least one of a channel capacity, a channel bandwidth, a channel jitter, or a channel packet loss.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is defined by at least one cut off frequency, and wherein the at least one cut off frequency is configured to be adjusted to be proportional to at least one of a measure of packet loss or a measure of jitter.

### Claim 10

A device comprising:
a channel determiner configured to determine characteristics of a channel over which a signal is to be transmitted;
a portion determiner configured to determine a first frequency portion of the signal based on the determined characteristics of the channel, the first frequency portion comprising a proportion of the signal that is calculated based on the determined characteristics of the channel, the calculated proportion being relatively higher when the determined characteristics of the channel indicate poor channel conditions than when the determined characteristics of the channel indicate good channel conditions;
a core encoder configured to encode the first frequency portion of the signal using a model based encoding method to produce a first encoded signal portion;
an enhancement encoder configured to encode a second frequency portion of the signal using a non-model based encoding method to produce a second encoded signal portion; and
a transmitter configured to transmit the first encoded signal portion and the second encoded signal portion via the channel.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The device of claim 10, wherein the second frequency portion of the signal is defined by at least one cut off frequency, and wherein the at least one cut off frequency is further configured to be adjusted to be inversely proportional to available bandwidth of the channel.
