## Abstract

The present invention effectively cancels echo, near-end crosstalk and far-end crosstalk. A FEXT canceller is placed at the transmitter rather than at the receiver according to an aspect of the invention. In some embodiment, a FEXT canceller can be placed at the receiver only or the combination of both ends. The FEXT canceller is continuously adapted with information sent back from a remote receiver and with data from a neighbor transmitter that causes the crosstalk at the remote receiver. This allows the FEXT canceller to quickly adapt to a change in crosstalk function or conditions with the surrounding environment, for example, aging, temperature, humidity, physical pressure, etc. In some embodiments, an adaptation control signal is sent back from the receiver to the transmitter by using an overhead bit in the frame format. In some embodiments, part of the FEXT canceller is built-in at the remote receiver.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
receiving an error signal at a first transceiver via a communication channel, wherein the error signal is based, at least in part, on a property of crosstalk at a second transceiver;
generating a plurality of filter coefficients based on the error signal;
filtering a data signal using the plurality of filter coefficients; and
transmitting the filtered data signal destined for the second transceiver via the communication channel.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the crosstalk at the second transceiver is generated, at least in part, by another data signal transmitted via the communication channel by a third transceiver.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein said generating a plurality of filter coefficients comprises correlating the error signal and the other data signal input to the third transceiver.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein the crosstalk comprises first crosstalk, the method further comprising:
generating another error signal based, at least in part, on a property of second crosstalk at the first transceiver; and
compensating, at least in part, for the second crosstalk by correlating the other error signal with the other data signal input to the third transceiver.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said generating a plurality of filter coefficient comprises adapting a plurality of finite impulse response (FIR) filter coefficients.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the error signal had been inserted into the communication channel by the second transceiver.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising extracting the error signal from an information signal received from the second transceiver.

### Claim 8

A system comprising:
a receiver configured to extract an error signal received via a communication channel from a first transmitter;
an error canceller configured to receive data input to a second transmitter and the error signal and to generate at least one coefficient value; and
a third transmitter configured to utilize the at least one coefficient value to transmit data via the communication channel.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller comprises a finite impulse response (FIR) filter.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, further comprising:
another error canceller configured to receive data from the first transmitter and another error signal generated by the receiver, wherein the other error canceller is further configured to generate at least one coefficient value.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, further comprising:
an echo canceller configured to compensate for echo in a signal received by the receiver.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error signal is a first error signal, the system further comprising:
an insertion block coupled between the receiver and the second transmitter, wherein the insertion block is configured to insert a second error signal into the communication channel.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller forms a portion of the second transmitter.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller is formed, at least in part, in the third transmitter and, at least in part, in the receiver.

### Claim 15 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller comprises a digital finite impulse response (FIR) filter, the system further comprising:
a digital-to-analog converter coupled between the digital FIR filter and the third transmitter.

### Claim 16 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller comprises a digital finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and wherein the system is further configured to receive a digital transmit signal combined with a digital FIR filter output signal.

### Claim 17 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the error canceller comprises an analog finite impulse response (FIR) filter.
