## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated X18B749 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof, produced by crossing Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. proprietary inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprises crossing hybrid maize variety X18B749 with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X18B749 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. This invention relates to the maize variety X18B749, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X18B749. This invention further relates to methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X18B749.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A seed of hybrid maize variety X18B749, wherein representative seed is produced by crossing a first plant of variety PHV5W with a second plant of variety PH17BT, and wherein representative seed of said varieties PHV5W and PH17BT have been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-12287 and PTA-12829, respectively.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method of plant breeding comprising a) isolating nucleic acids from the seed of hybrid maize variety X18B749 of claim 1, b) identifying one or more polymorphisms from the isolated nucleic acids, and c) selecting a plant having one or more of the identified polymorphisms wherein the plant is used in a plant breeding method.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A plant, plant part, or cell produced by growing the seed of the hybrid maize variety of claim 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A method of plant breeding comprising a) isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or cell of hybrid maize variety X18B749 of claim 3, b) identifying one or more polymorphisms from the isolated nucleic acids, and c) selecting a plant having one or more of the identified polymorphisms wherein the plant is used in a plant breeding method.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising obtaining the plant of claim 3 or a part thereof and producing said commodity plant product therefrom.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the commodity plant product is starch, seed oil, corn syrup or protein.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

A method for producing a second maize plant comprising applying plant breeding techniques to a first maize plant, or parts thereof, wherein said first maize plant is the maize plant of claim 3, and wherein application of said techniques results in the production of said second maize plant.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further defined as producing an inbred maize plant derived from hybrid maize variety X18B749, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said first maize plant with itself or another maize plant to produce seed of a subsequent generation;
(b) harvesting and planting the seed of the subsequent generation to produce at least one plant of the subsequent generation; and
(c) repeating steps (a) and (b) for an additional 2-10 generations to produce an inbred maize plant derived from hybrid maize variety X18B749.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further defined as producing an inbred maize plant derived from hybrid maize variety X18B749, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing said first maize plant with an inducer variety to produce haploid seed; and
(b) doubling the haploid seed to produce an inbred maize plant derived from hybrid maize variety X18B749.

### Claim 10

A seed of hybrid maize variety X18B749 further comprising a locus conversion, wherein said seed is produced by crossing a first plant of variety PHV5W with a second plant of variety PH17BT; wherein representative seed of said varieties PHV5W and PH17BT have been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-12287 and PTA-12829, respectively; and wherein at least one of said varieties PHV5W and PH17BT further comprises a locus conversion.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The seed of the hybrid maize variety of claim 10, wherein the locus conversion confers a trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

A method of plant breeding comprising a) isolating nucleic acids from the seed of hybrid maize variety X18B749 of claim 10, b) identifying one or more polymorphisms from the isolated analyzing said nucleic acids, and c) selecting a plant having one or more of the identified polymorphisms wherein the plant is used in a plant breeding method.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

A plant, plant part, or cell produced by growing the seed of the hybrid maize variety of claim 10.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

A method of plant breeding comprising a) isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or cell of hybrid maize variety X18B749 of claim 13, b) identifying one or more polymorphisms from the isolated nucleic acids, and c) selecting a plant having one or more of the identified polymorphisms wherein the plant is used in a plant breeding method.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising obtaining the plant of claim 13 or a part thereof and producing said commodity plant product therefrom.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)
