## Abstract

The present invention is directed to methods of treating or preventing the development of obesity by administering compounds that stabilize mast cells. In addition, it includes pharmaceutical compositions which have both a mast cell stabilizer and instructions regarding the use of the stabilizer in treating or preventing obesity.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of inhibiting weight gain in an obese patient, comprising administering to said patient an effective amount of nedocromil.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said nedocromil is administered to said patient for at least a period sufficient for said patient to lose at least 15% of their total body weight at the time that treatment is initiated.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said patient is free of allergies, heart disease and diabetes at the time that treatment is initiated.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said nedocromil is administered orally at a dose of 50-1500 mg per day.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said nedocromil is administered nasally at a dose of 5-100 mg per day

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said nedocromil is in the form of nedocromil sodium and is administered nasally a dose of 5-50 mg per day.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said nedocromil is in the form of nedocromil sodium and is administered orally a dose of 50-500 mg per day.

### Claim 8

A method of inhibiting weight gain in an obese patient, comprising administering to said patient an effective amount lodoxamide.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said lodoxamide is administered to said patient for at least a period sufficient for said patient to lose at least 15% of their total body weight at the time that treatment is initiated.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said patient is free of allergies, heart disease and diabetes at the time that treatment is initiated.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said lodoxamide is administered orally at a dose of 50-1500 mg per day.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said lodoxamide-is administered nasally at a dose of 5-100 mg per day.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein said lodoxamide is in the form of lodoxamide tromethamine and is administered orally a dose of 1-200 mg per day.
