## Abstract

Methods and pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of cancer or acute ischemia are provided. Also provided are methods of identifying agents capable of preventing the formation of or dissociating the MSF-A-HIF-1alpha protein complex, and methods of determining the prognosis of an individual having cancer by identifying the presence or absence of such a protein complex.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of treating prostate cancer and/or inhibiting a growth of a prostate cancerous tumor and/or prostate cancerous metastases in an individual in need thereof comprising providing to the individual an MSF-A derived peptide or peptide analogue, of up to 30 amino acid resides in length, which includes the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4213, thereby treating the prostate cancer and/or inhibiting the growth of the prostate cancerous tumor and/or the prostate cancerous metastases in the individual.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said MSF-A derived peptide or peptide analogue further comprises a modification of said peptide or peptide analogue for increasing penetration into cells or increasing stability while in a body.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein said modification comprises an N terminus modification, a C terminus modification, a peptide bond modification, a backbone modification or a residue modification.
