## Abstract

The present invention teaches the use of a metal or an oxide of a metal having a capability of reducing the amount of the chemokine IP-IO in a sample and/or reducing the production of IP-IO in cells. The metal is a metal of group 4 or 5 in the periodic table of the elements and preferably titanium. These metals and metal oxides can selectively bind IP-IO to its surface to thereby scavenge IP-IO from the surrounding medium. In addition, a metal-cell contact induces a reduction in the production of IP-IO from IP-IO producing cells. The metals and metal oxides of the present invention can therefore be used for treating and/or preventing medical conditions characterized by adverse IP-IO expression, such as inflammatory reactions.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of reducing 10 kDa interferon-γ inducible protein, IP-10, in an extracted body fluid of a subject suffering from a disease characterized by adverse expression and/or release of IP-10, the method comprising:
extracting body fluid from the subject;
contacting said body fluid ex vivo with a metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and tantalum, or an oxide of said metal, wherein IP-10 in the body fluid binds to the metal or metal oxide;
removing the metal or oxide of the metal to which IP-10 is bound from the body fluid; and
after said removal, returning said body fluid to said subject.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said body fluid is selected from the group consisting of blood, blood plasma, lymph fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, ascites and synovial fluid.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said disease is selected from the group consisting of an infectious disease, an adverse inflammatory response and a host versus graft disease characterized by adverse expression and/or release of IP-10 in said subject.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein said infectious disease is a viral infectious disease.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein said adverse inflammatory response is an autoimmune disease.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein said adverse inflammatory response is an inflammatory disease of the gastro intestinal tract of said subject.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein said adverse inflammatory response is an inflammatory skin disease.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein said host versus graft disease is an acute graft rejection.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said disease is a foreign body reaction.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said metal is selected from the group consisting of titanium and tantalum.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said oxide of said metal is selected from the group consisting of an oxide of titanium and an oxide of tantalum.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method according to claim 11, wherein said oxide of titanium is a titanium dioxide.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein said titanium dioxide is a titanium dioxide of rutile form or a mixture of rutile form and anatase form.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said metal or said metal oxide is in the form of granules or particles having a total porosity of at least about 50%.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein said metal or said metal oxide is in the form of granules or particles having a total surface area of at least about 0.01 m2/g.
