Abstract
A surgical tool system with a powered tool that includes a memory in which data describing the characteristics of the power signals that are to be sourced to the toll are stored. A control console based on the data in the tool memory sources the power signal to the tool. Both the data signals written out from the tool memory and the power signals from the console are exchanged over common console terminals and common tool terminals. An isolation circuit in the tool prevents the applied power signals from the console from adversely effecting the tool memory.
Claims27
A powered surgical tool, said tool including:
- a body;
- terminal components attached to said body for releasably receiving a cable and to which an AC power signal from the cable is applied for actuating said tool;
- a power applicator attached to said body designed for application to tissue to perform a therapeutic or diagnostic task upon the application of the AC power signal to said terminal components;
- and
- a memory attached to said body, said memory storing data describing characteristics of the power signal applied to said tool, said memory configured to, in response to an AC interrogation signal, write out the data stored in said memory;
- and
- an isolation circuit connected between said memory and at least one said terminal component to which the power signal is applied, said isolation circuit configured to:
- when a signal having the characteristics of memory interrogation signal is applied to said terminal components, apply the signal to said memory without appreciably changing the characteristics of the signal;
- and
- when a signal having characteristics different from the characteristics of the interrogation signal is applied to said terminal components, substantially change the characteristics of the signal applied to said memory so that the changed signal applied to said memory does not adversely affect said memory and
- wherein, said memory and said isolation circuit are collectively configured so that said memory writes out the data stored therein over said isolation circuit through said at least one terminal component to which the power signal is applied.
A powered surgical tool, said tool including:
- a body;
- at least one terminal attached to said body that is configured for releasable connection to a power supply that is separate from said tool for receiving from the power supply an AC power signal;
- a power generating unit attached to said body that is connected to said at least one terminal to which the power signal is applied for receiving the AC power signal and outputting energy that is applied to a patient to perform a medical/surgical procedure;
- a memory attached to said body, said memory containing data describing characteristics of said tool, said memory configured to, in response to an AC interrogation signal at a given frequency, write out the data stored in said memory;
- an isolation circuit that extends between said at least one terminal to which the power signal is applied and said memory, said isolation circuit configured to:
- when an AC signal having a frequency of the frequency of the interrogation signal is applied to the at least one terminal, apply the signal to said memory without appreciably changing the characteristics of the signal;
- when an AC signal having a frequency that is at least one of less than one-half the frequency of the interrogation signal or more than two times the frequency of the interrogation signal is applied to the at least one terminal to which the power signal is applied, change the characteristics of the signal applied to said memory so that the signal applied to the memory does not adversely affect the memory;
- and
- allow data written out of said memory to be accessed over said isolation circuit from the at least one terminal to which the power signal is applied.
A powered surgical tool, said tool including:
- a body;
- at least one terminal attached to said body that is configured for releasable connection to a power supply that is separate from said tool for receiving from the power supply an AC power signal;
- a power generating unit attached to said body that is connected to said at least one terminal for receiving the AC power signal and outputting energy that is applied to a patient to perform a medical/surgical procedure;
- a memory attached to said body and that is connected to said at least one terminal to which the power signal is supplied to said body, said memory containing data that describing characteristics of said tool, said memory having two inputs across which AC signals are applied so that, in response to an interrogation signal, said memory writes out data over the inputs;
- and
- an isolation circuit disposed in said body, said isolation circuit being connected between said at least one terminal that receives the power signal and said memory, said isolation circuit including an inductor that extends between the inputs of said memory and said isolation circuit configured to:
- when a signal having the characteristics of memory interrogation signal is applied to said at least one terminal that receives the power signal, apply the signal to said memory without appreciably changing the characteristics of the signal;
- when a signal having characteristics different from the characteristics of the interrogation signal is applied to said at least one terminal that receives the power signal, substantially change the characteristics of the signal applied to said memory so that the changed signal applied to said memory does not adversely affect the memory;
- and
- allow the data read from said memory to be read out across said isolation circuit through said at least one terminal that receives the power signal.
