## Abstract

Needle assemblies are generally discussed herein with particular discussions extended to needle assemblies having a tip protector with a plurality of wall surfaces for preventing contact with the needle tip from a side. Aspects of the tip protectors discussed herein include a first protector body having an arm for blocking a needle tip surrounded by a second protector body having a plurality of wall surfaces.

the tip protector comprising a first protector body comprising two spaced apart arms each comprising a free end with a gap between the two free ends; the first protector body further comprising a proximal wall with an opening located inside an interior cavity of a second protector body, which has a body comprising at least two edges and an arm comprising a projection that is movable relative to the at least two edges;
wherein the crimp, the material build up, the bend or the combinations thereof on the needle is configured to engage the opening on the proximal wall in a protective position; and
wherein the arm with the projection on the second protector body and the first protector body are located along a same axial position of the shaft of the needle; and
wherein the second protector body comprises two proximal walls having an elongated non-circular opening therebetween.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the proximal wall of the first protector body is located between the two spaced apart arms, at an end opposite the two free ends.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claims 1, wherein the at least two edges are located along an axial position of the shaft and the interior cavity of the second protector where the first protector body is locate and adjacent the arm on the second protector body.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the arm of the second protector body defines at least part of the interior cavity having the first protector body located therein.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the housing is a catheter hub.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the two arms on the first protector body each comprises a non-uniform arm width.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the first protector body has a distal end edge and the second protector body has a distal end edge and wherein the needle tip moves proximally of the distal end edge of the first protector body and the distal edge of the second protector body in the protective position.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the at least two edges are located adjacent side wall sections on the body of the second protector body that enclose the first protector body.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the arm comprising the projection on the second protector body has a free end that points in an opposite direction of the two free ends of the first protector body.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The needle assembly of claim 1, wherein the two spaced apart arms of the first protector body and the arm of the second protector body have arm sections that overlap along an axial position of the shaft of the needle.

### Claim 11

A needle assembly comprising:
a housing comprising a wall having an interior wall surface defining a cavity having a tip protector disposed therein;
a needle, which has a shaft, a sharpened needle tip, and a crimp, a material build up, a bend or combinations thereof, passing through the housing and the tip protector; wherein the tip protector comprises:
a first protector body comprising two spaced apart arms each with an independently movable distal end edge and an opening on a proximal wall for engaging the crimp, the material build up, the bend or the combinations thereof;
a second protector body comprising a distal opening, a body comprising at least two edges and an arm comprising a projection that is movable relative to the at least two edges and defining at least in part an interior cavity having the first protector body disposed therein, and an opening on the body; and
wherein the second protector body comprises a proximal wall comprising at least two end walls having an elongated non-circular opening therebetween, said elongated non-circular opening on the proximal wall of the second protector body disposed proximally of the opening on the first protector body.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The needle assembly of claim 11, further comprising a second opening located opposite the opening on the body of the second protector body.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The needle assembly of claim 11, wherein the arm of the second protector body comprises a distal end and a proximal end and wherein the distal end of the arm is directly attached to the second protector body and the arm extends in a proximal direction and having a free end.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The needle assembly of claim 13, wherein the first protector body has a distal end edge and the second protector body has a distal end edge and wherein the sharpened needle tip moves proximally of the distal end edge of the first protector body and the distal edge of the second protector body in the protective position.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The needle assembly of claim 11, wherein the proximal wall of the first protector body prohibits the needle from moving proximally of the tip protector in the used position.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The needle assembly of claim 11, wherein the needle is prevented from moving distally of the two arms of the first protector body in a used position.
