## CPC

- G03B 9/10: Blade or disc rotating or pivoting about axis normal to its plane
- G03B 9/08: Shutters
- G03B: APPARATUS OR ARRANGEMENTS FOR TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OR FOR PROJECTING OR VIEWING THEM; APPARATUS OR ARRANGEMENTS EMPLOYING ANALOGOUS TECHNIQUES USING WAVES OTHER THAN OPTICAL WAVES; ACCESSORIES THEREFOR (optical parts of such apparatus G02B; photosensitive materials or processes for photographic purposes G03C; apparatus for processing exposed photographic materials G03D)

## Abstract

A shutter assembly includes a drive ring having a permanent magnet disposed thereon. The shutter assembly also includes a solenoid defining a gap between first and second magnetic poles thereof, the drive ring being disposed coplanar with the solenoid and being rotatable in response to a magnetic field created between the first and second magnetic poles. The shutter assembly also includes a plurality of shutter blades configured to transition between an open position and a closed position in response to rotation of the drive ring. The shutter assembly further includes a base plate separating the plurality of shutter blades from at least one of the drive ring and the solenoid.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A shutter assembly, comprising:
a base plate defining a shutter opening having a central axis;
a drive ring rotatable about the central axis;
a plurality of shutter blades configured to transition between an open position exposing the shutter opening and a closed position substantially occluding the shutter opening in response to rotation of the drive ring;
a first solenoid disposed on the base plate;
a second solenoid substantially identical to the first solenoid, the second solenoid being positioned such that the drive ring is rotatably disposed between the first and second solenoids; and
a magnet moveable in a plane substantially perpendicular to the central axis in response to an electrical field created by at least one of the first and second solenoids, wherein movement of the magnet relative to the central axis drives rotation of the drive ring in a first direction,
wherein the first and second solenoids include respective first magnetic poles configured to take on a common first polarity, the at least one of the first and second solenoids driving movement of the magnet away from the respective first magnetic pole to rotate the drive ring in the first direction when the at least one of the first and second solenoids takes on the first polarity.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The shutter assembly of claim 1, wherein the first magnetic poles of the first and second solenoids are configured to take on a common second polarity opposite the first polarity, the at least one of the first and second solenoids permitting movement of the magnet toward the respective first magnetic pole to permit rotation of the drive ring in a second direction opposite the first direction when the at least one of the first and second solenoids takes on the second polarity.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The shutter assembly of claim 2, further comprising a driver configured to direct an electrical current to the first and second solenoids, thereby forming the respective first and second magnetic poles of the first and second solenoids.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The shutter assembly of claim 3, wherein the driver is configured to reverse a polarity of the electrical current, thereby transitioning the first magnetic poles from the first polarity to the second polarity.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The shutter assembly of claim 1, wherein the electrical field created by the first solenoid moves the magnet to drive rotation of the drive ring in the first direction, and wherein the second solenoid provides additional force to drive rotation of the drive ring in the first direction.

### Claim 6

A method of operating a shutter assembly, comprising:
forming an electrical field with a first solenoid, the electrical field controllable to move a permanent magnet of the shutter assembly, wherein movement of the permanent magnet drives rotation of a drive ring of the shutter assembly in a first direction about a central axis of the shutter assembly;
energizing a second solenoid substantially identical to the first solenoid to assist in rotating the drive ring in the first direction, the drive ring being rotatably disposed between the first and second solenoids;
transitioning a plurality of shutter blades from an open position exposing a shutter opening of the shutter assembly and a closed position substantially occluding the shutter opening in response to rotation of the drive ring; and
applying electrical current to the first and second solenoids, the electrical current creating first and second magnetic poles of the first solenoid and first and second magnetic poles of the second solenoid, the first magnetic poles of the first and second solenoids having a common first polarity, and the second magnetic poles of the first and second solenoids having a common second polarity opposite the first polarity.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein movement of the permanent magnet comprises movement in plane substantially perpendicular to the central axis, at least a portion of the permanent magnet being disposed substantially coplanar with the first solenoid.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, further including stopping rotation of the drive ring in the first direction via an abutting surface of the shutter assembly.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, further including driving movement of the permanent magnet away from the first magnetic pole of at least one of the first and second solenoids to rotate the dive ring in the first direction, the at least one of the first and second solenoids assisting in driving movement of the permanent magnet away from the first magnetic pole.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9 further including permitting, with the at least one of the first and second solenoids, movement of the permanent magnet toward the first magnetic pole of the at least one of the first and second solenoids to permit rotation of the drive ring in a second direction opposite the first direction.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, wherein the electrical current is directed to the first and second solenoids by a driver operably connected to the first and second solenoids, the method further including reversing a polarity of the electrical current, via the driver, to permit rotation of the drive ring in the second direction.
