## Abstract

A method of forming a protective tip on a wire brush so as to make the brush less prone to damage sensitive surfaces, includes the steps of providing a brush with a wire core and a plurality of bristles defining a bristle block extending radially from the core and anchored in the core, and melting a portion of the wire core at an end thereof, by applying an energy source to the end, to form a protective tip.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of forming a protective tip on a wire brush so as to make the brush less prone to damage sensitive surfaces, said method comprising the steps of:
providing a brush with a wire core and a plurality of bristles defining a bristle block extending radially from said core and anchored in said core;
melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof, by applying an energy source to said end, to form a protective tip; and
shielding said bristle block from said energy source prior to said step of melting to prevent damage to said bristle block.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by laser beam welding.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by gas tungsten arc welding.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by plasma arc welding.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by electron beam welding.

### Claim 6

A method of forming a protective tip on a twisted wire brush having a plurality of metal leg members defining a core and a plurality of bristles retained by said core, said method comprising the steps of:
melting an end of said core by applying an energy source to said core to form said protective tip without the addition of any other quantity of material to said core; and
shielding said bristle block from said energy source prior to said step of melting to prevent damage to said bristle block.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein:
all of said metal leg members are homogeneous.

### Claim 8 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said step of melting is achieved by laser beam welding.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said step of melting is achieved by gas tungsten arc welding.

### Claim 10 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said step of melting is achieved by plasma arc welding.

### Claim 11 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said step of melting is achieved by electron beam welding.

### Claim 12 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein:
said step of melting includes melting a portion of each of said leg members of said core.

### Claim 13

A method of forming a protective tip on a brush having a wire core, said method comprising the steps of:
melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof by applying an energy source to said end to form a smooth and substantially rounded surface at said end without the addition of any other quantity of material such that said wire core and said smooth and substantially rounded surface at said end are homogeneous; and
shielding a bristle block of said brush from said energy source prior to said step of melting.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
said wire core is formed entirely from metal.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by laser beam welding.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by gas tungsten arc welding.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
said step of melting a portion of said wire core at an end thereof is achieved by plasma arc welding.
