Abstract
Techniques are provided for outputting entries from supplemental content (e.g., such as reference works) based on an amount of force applied to a touch-sensitive display of a device. For example, a user reading an electronic book (eBook) on a device having a touch-sensitive display may select a word or a phrase within the eBook by touching the display at a location of the word or the phrase. The techniques may determine one or more entries from the supplemental content to output based on a measured amount of force of the selection. To illustrate, the device may output a dictionary definition of the selected word in response to measuring a first amount of force or output a thesaurus entry for the word in response to measuring a second amount of force.
Claims20
One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors to perform acts comprising:
- receiving a first indication that a touch-sensitive display has detected a first user input;
- selecting a first entry from supplemental works to output to the touch-sensitive display based at least in part on the first user input, the supplemental works comprising at least one of a dictionary, a thesaurus, an almanac, an atlas, an encyclopedia, a gazetteer, or a reference work;
- receiving a second indication that the touch-sensitive display has detected a second user input having an amount of force greater than a predetermined threshold;
- and
- selecting a second entry from the supplemental works to output to the touch-sensitive display based at least in part on the amount of force of the second user input.
A method comprising:
- under control of an electronic device configured with specific executable instructions and having a touch-sensitive display,
- in response to receiving a first indication that the touch-sensitive display has detected a first user input, selecting a first entry from multiple entries of supplemental content to output to the touch-sensitive display based at least in part on the first user input;
- and
- in response to receiving a second indication that the touch-sensitive display has detected a second user input having an amount of force greater than a predetermined threshold, selecting a second entry from the multiple entries of the supplemental content to output to the touch-sensitive display based at least in part on the amount of force of the second user input, the second entry received, over a network, from a reference work stored at a server.
An electronic device, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- a display;
- a touch sensor to detect user inputs of varying force;
- a memory coupled to the one or more processors, the memory storing a content item and instructions that are executable by the one or more processors to perform acts comprising:
- in response to detecting a first user input using the touch sensor, selecting a first entry from supplemental content to output to the display, the first entry selected based at least in part on the first user input;
- in response to detecting, using the touch sensor, a second user input having an amount of force greater than a predetermined threshold, selecting a second entry from the supplemental content to output to the display by prompting a user to select one of multiple different reference work entries, the second entry selected based at least in part on the amount of force of the second user input.
