## Abstract

LED dies are suspended in an ink and printed on a first support substrate to form a light emitting layer having a light emitting surface emitting primary light, such as blue light. A mixture of a transparent binder, phosphor powder, and transparent glass beads is formed as an ink and printed over the light emitting surface. The mixture forms a wavelength conversion layer when cured. The beads are preferably sized so that the tops of the beads protrude completely through the conversion layer. Some of the primary light passes through the beads with virtually no attenuation or backscattering, and some of the primary light is converted by the phosphor to secondary light. The combination of the secondary light and the primary light passing though the beads may form white light. The overall color is highly controllable by controlling the percentage weight of the beads.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A light emitting structure comprising:
a primary light source generating primary light;
a first mixture comprising wavelength conversion particles, transparent particles, and a binder, wherein the wavelength conversion particles and the transparent particles are substantially uniformly distributed in the binder, the first mixture overlying the primary light source, wherein the binder forms a layer having a thickness less than a diameter of the transparent particles in the first mixture,
wherein the transparent particles completely protrude through the binder along the layer,
wherein a first portion of the primary light passes through the transparent particles, and a second portion of the primary light is converted by the wavelength conversion particles to secondary light, and
wherein a combination of the secondary light and the primary light passing though the transparent particles contributes to an overall color emission.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, further comprising a support surface on which the first mixture is deposited.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the support surface overlies one or more light emitting diodes (LED).

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, further comprising a support surface on which the first mixture is deposited, wherein the first mixture contains the transparent particles prior to being deposited on the support surface.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the transparent particles comprise transparent beads.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, further comprising a support surface, wherein the first mixture is deposited on a first side of the support surface, and wherein a second side of the support surface has deposited thereon a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs).

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the transparent particles form lenses that redirect the primary light.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1 wherein an index of refraction of the transparent particles is equal to or lower than an index of refraction of the binder.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the primary light source comprises an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs), and the first mixture is formed over light emitting surfaces of the LEDs.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The structure of claim 9, wherein the array of LEDs, the first mixture, and the transparent particles are affixed together to form an integral light emitting device.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The structure of claim 10, wherein the LEDs emit blue light, and a combination of the blue light and secondary light generated by the wavelength conversion particles produces white light.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1 wherein the binder includes a de-wetting agent to promote the binder being removed from the tops of the transparent particles by capillary action.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the wavelength conversion particles comprises phosphor.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the first mixture is deposited over the primary light source as a liquid.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The structure of claim 1, wherein the first mixture is pre-formed as a solid structure and later affixed to the primary light source.
