## Abstract

Novel laccases, nucleic acid sequences encoding such laccases, and vectors and host cells for expressing the laccases are described. The novel laccase enzymes may be employed in conjunction with mediators to provide an improved method for bleaching denim fabrics.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for bleaching dye in solution comprising treating the dye in solution with a laccase polypeptide having at least 95% amino acid sequence identity to the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 14 and an effective mediator.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the mediator is selected from the group consisting of acetosyringone, syringaldehyde, syringamide, methyl syringamide, 2-hydroxyethyl syringamide, methyl syringate, syringonitrile, dimethylsyringamide, and syringic acid.

### Claim 3

A process for bleaching fabric comprising contacting the fabric with a laccase polypeptide having at least 95% amino acid sequence identity to the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO: 14.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The process of claim 3 further comprising contacting the fabric with a mediator selected from the group consisting of acetosyringone, syringaldehyde, syringamide, methyl syringamide, 2-hydroxyethyl syringamide, methyl syringate, syringonitrile, dimethylsyringamide, and syringic acid.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The process according to claim 3, wherein the fabric is dyed with a vat dye.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The process according to claim 3, wherein the fabric is a cellulosic fabric, a mixture of cellulosic fibers, or a mixture of cellulosic and synthetic fibers.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

The process according to claim 3, wherein the fabric is denim.
