## Abstract

An electrolytic oxide reduction system according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present invention may include a plurality of anode assemblies and an anode shroud for each of the anode assemblies. The anode shroud may be used to dilute, cool, and/or remove off-gas from the electrolytic oxide reduction system. The anode shroud may include a body portion having a tapered upper section that includes an apex. The body portion may have an inner wall that defines an off-gas collection cavity. A chimney structure may extend from the apex of the upper section and be connected to the off-gas collection cavity of the body portion. The chimney structure may include an inner tube within an outer tube. Accordingly, a sweep gas/cooling gas may be supplied down the annular space between the inner and outer tubes, while the off-gas may be removed through an exit path defined by the inner tube.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An anode shroud comprising:
a body portion having a tapered upper section that includes an apex, the upper section sloping downwards from the apex, the body portion having an inner wall that defines an off-gas collection cavity, an underside of the body portion being unenclosed;
a plurality of anode guides on opposing slopes of the upper section of the body portion, each of the plurality of anode guides defining a passage that leads to the off-gas collection cavity within the body portion; and
a chimney structure extending from the apex of the upper section and connected to the off-gas collection cavity of the body portion, the chimney structure including an inner tube within an outer tube, an end of the inner tube connected to the inner wall of the body portion, and an end of the outer tube connected to an outer wall of the upper section.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the apex of the upper section is centrally positioned relative to a plan view of the body portion.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the upper section slopes at an angle ranging from 25 to 75 degrees relative to a horizontal reference line.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the plurality of anode guides are uniformly spaced apart from each other.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the chimney structure is flanked by an equal number of anode guides.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein uppermost surfaces of the plurality of anode guides are level with each other.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein an uppermost surface of each of the plurality of anode guides is higher than that of the apex of the upper section but lower than that of the chimney structure.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein an outer surface of the inner tube and an inner surface of the outer tube define an annular space that leads to the off-gas collection cavity in the body portion, the chimney structure configured such that the annular space provides an entrance path for sweep gas to flow down into the off-gas collection cavity of the body portion to dilute, cool, and remove off-gas from the off-gas collection cavity.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The anode shroud of claim 8, wherein the body portion includes one or more internal channels extending beneath one or more slopes of the upper section from the apex to a base of the upper section.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The anode shroud of claim 9, wherein the one or more internal channels is connected to the annular space.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The anode shroud of claim 10, wherein the one or more internal channels is connected to the off-gas collection cavity through one or more port holes at the base of the upper section.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The anode shroud of claim 8, wherein the chimney structure is configured such that the inner tube provides an exit path for the sweep gas and off-gas.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the inner tube and outer tube are concentrically arranged.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the inner tube is spaced apart from the outer tube by a distance ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 inches.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the inner tube has a diameter ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 inches, and the outer tube has a diameter ranging from 0.6 to 2.0 inches.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the inner tube includes weep holes.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the body portion further includes a lower section that adjoins the upper section, the lower section having vertical sidewalls.

### Claim 18 (depends on 1)

The anode shroud of claim 1, wherein the anode shroud is formed of an alloy that is resistant to corrosion during an electrolytic oxide reduction process.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The anode shroud of claim 18, wherein the alloy is a Ni—Cr—Al—Fe alloy.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The anode shroud of claim 19, wherein the Ni—Cr—Al—Fe alloy includes about 75% Ni by weight, 16% Cr by weight, 4.5% Al by weight, and 3% Fe by weight.
