## Abstract

A multilayered acoustic panel (1) including: a substantially air impermeable outer membrane layer (3); an underlying second portion bonded to the membrane layer (3), the second portion including an intermediate layer (5); and an inner layer (7) underlying the second portion, the inner layer (7) having a plurality of apertures (6) therein, said apertures (6) being covered by the intermediate layer (5) of the second portion, wherein the membrane layer (3) and second portion are not bonded together where the membrane layer (3) overlies the apertures (6) such that those portions of the membrane layer (3) which overlie the apertures (6) are free to vibrate independently of the second portion in response to sound waves incident on the membrane layer (3).

## Claims

### Claim 1

A multilayered acoustic panel including:
a substantially air impermeable outer membrane layer;
an underlying second portion bonded to the membrane layer, the second portion including an intermediate layer; and
an inner layer underlying the second portion, the inner layer having a plurality of apertures therein, said apertures being covered by the intermediate layer of the second portion,
wherein the membrane layer and second portion are not bonded together where the membrane layer overlies the apertures such that those portions of the membrane layer which overlie the apertures are free to vibrate independently of the second portion in response to sound waves incident on the membrane layer.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein each portion of the membrane layer which overlies an aperture defines a diaphragm which is able to vibrate in response to sound waves incident on the membrane layer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 2 wherein an air gap is defined between the membrane layer and the second portion where each portion of the membrane layer overlies an aperture.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 3 wherein an air gap is defined between the membrane layer and the intermediate layer where each portion of the membrane layer overlies an aperture.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 4 wherein the intermediate layer is slightly depressed into the apertures to thereby provide said air gaps.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 5 wherein the air gaps have a maximum depth of approximately 1 to 4 mm.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 2 wherein the intermediate layer of the second portion is bonded to the membrane layer but is not bonded to those portions of the membrane layer which define the diaphragms.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

A multilayered acoustic panel as claimed in claim 7 wherein the second portion further includes an adhesive layer positioned between the intermediate layer and the inner layer.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

An acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the intermediate layer is made of a fibrous material or a foam material.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

An acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inner layer is a sound absorbing layer made of a fibrous material or a foam material.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

An acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the intermediate layer is made of a non porous material.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

An acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the membrane layer is made of a polymer film.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

An acoustic panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the membrane layer has a surface density of less than approximately 100 g/m2.
