## Abstract

In described embodiments, a hot liquid extraction system includes a vessel, a controllable steam and water source external from the vessel which heats the liquid of the corresponding vessel, a filter assembly disposed within the vessel operable to filter and remove a solid from the brewed beverage, and a valve to dispense the filtered beverage from the base of the brew vessel. Some embodiments include one or more valves operable to regulate water flow and steam into the brewing vessel, and a filter operable to separate a brewed liquid from a flavor base and to remove a spent flavor base from the system. Some embodiments include processor control of the system, allowing for operation tailored to individual user requirements that might be downloaded to the processor through various wired and non-wired interfaces.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A machine for brewing a beverage, the machine comprising:
a brew chamber having a brew chamber upper end and a brew chamber lower end;
a steam chamber disposed below the brew chamber, the steam chamber having a steam chamber upper end and a steam chamber lower end, the steam chamber lower end being in fluid communication with the brew chamber;
a filtering base removably inserted into the brew chamber;
a boiler having:
a steam outlet in fluid communication with the steam chamber; and
a heated water outlet in fluid communication with the steam chamber;
a fresh water supply conduit having a first leg coupled directly to the boiler and a second leg coupled to the heated water outlet; and
a common inlet in fluid communication with the steam outlet, the heated water outlet, and the fresh water supply conduit, the common inlet providing an inlet from the steam outlet, the heated water outlet, and the fresh water supply conduit to the steam chamber.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The machine of claim 1, further comprising a conduit disposed in the steam chamber, the conduit having a first open end disposed at the steam chamber lower end and a second open end disposed at the brew chamber lower end, the conduit providing fluid communication between the brew chamber and the steam chamber.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The machine of claim 1, further comprising a vent valve located at the steam chamber upper end and a drain valve located at the steam chamber lower end.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The machine of claim 1, wherein the filtering base is disposed at the brew chamber lower end during operation of the machine and wherein the filtering base is movable to the brew chamber upper end after operation of the machine.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The machine of claim 1, further comprising a controller adapted to control flow of steam from the steam outlet and flow of heated water from the heated water outlet.

### Claim 6

A machine for brewing a beverage, the machine comprising:
an upper chamber having a lower end and an upper end;
a filtering base disposed inside the upper chamber and movable between the lower end and the upper end;
a lower chamber disposed below the upper chamber, the lower chamber having a lower end and an upper end;
a conduit extending downward from the lower end of the upper chamber toward the lower end of the lower chamber, the conduit providing for fluid communication between the lower chamber and the upper chamber;
a boiler having a hot water outlet in communication with the lower chamber;
a check valve assembly adapted to seal the lower end of the upper chamber;
a common inlet in fluid communication with the lower chamber, the upper chamber, the boiler, and the conduit, the common inlet providing an inlet from the lower chamber, the boiler, and the conduit to the upper chamber; and
a vent operable between a closed position and an open position, wherein, in the open position, the vent provides fluid communication between the lower chamber and atmosphere.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The machine according to claim 6, further comprising a seal disposed between the filtering base and an interior of the upper chamber.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The machine according to claim 7, wherein the check valve assembly is biased toward the lower end of the upper chamber.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The machine according to claim 6, wherein the conduit comprises a spray tip fitting disposed at the top end thereof.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The machine according to claim 9, wherein the spray tip fitting comprises a plurality of outlet openings extending radially around a perimeter of the spray tip fitting.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The machine according to claim 10, wherein each of the plurality of openings direct a liquid flow from the respective opening toward an interior wall of the upper chamber.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The machine according to claim 10, wherein the plurality of openings generate a vortex of fluid exiting through the plurality of openings.

### Claim 13 (depends on 6)

The machine according to claim 6, further comprising a heated fluid supply in fluid communication with the lower chamber.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The machine according to claim 13, wherein the heated fluid supply provides steam to the lower chamber via a first conduit.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The machine according to claim 14, wherein the heated fluid supply provides a heated liquid to the lower chamber via a second conduit.
