Abstract
Disclosed are compositions and methods for decreasing the viscosity and/or cohesiveness of and/or increasing the liquefaction of excessively or abnormally viscous or cohesive mucus or sputum. The composition contains a protein or peptide containing a thioredoxin active-site in reduced state and optionally further contains a reducing system.
Claims17
A method of treating abnormal or excessively viscous or cohesive mucus or sputum in a patient, comprising contacting the mucus or sputum of the patient with a composition comprising a thioredoxin protein or peptide having an amino acid sequence that is at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO:12 and having protein disulfide reductase activity.
A method of treating abnormal or excessively viscous or cohesive mucus or sputum in a patient having cystic fibrosis, comprising contacting the mucus or sputum of the patient with a composition comprising a thioredoxin protein or peptide having peptide having an amino acid sequence that is at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO:12 and having protein disulfide reductase activity.
A method of treating abnormal or excessively viscous or cohesive mucus or sputum in a patient having cystic fibrosis, comprising contacting the mucus or sputum of the patient with a composition comprising a thioredoxin protein or peptide peptide having an amino acid sequence that is at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO:12 and having protein disulfide reductase activity and wherein the step of contacting the mucus or sputum of the patient with the composition is performed by introducing the composition to the patient by inhalation.
