Method and apparatus for reacquiring lines in a cache

An apparatus, comprising:

• a queue adapted for storing at least one atomic instruction in response to the atomic instruction being retired, a target memory location being associated with load and store portions of the atomic instruction;
• and
• a cache adapted for acquiring a line of memory associated with the target memory location, storing the line of acquired memory in the cache, and if the line of acquired memory has been evicted, re-acquiring the line of memory in response to the atomic instruction being ready to write data to the cache, and re-acquiring the evicted line of memory a predetermined limited number of times before the atomic instruction becomes the oldest instruction stored in the queue.

A non-transitory computer readable storage device encoded with data that, when implemented in a manufacturing facility, adapts the manufacturing facility to create an apparatus, comprising:

• a queue adapted for storing at least one atomic instruction in response to the atomic instruction being retired, a target memory location being associated with load and store portions of the atomic instruction;
• and
• a cache adapted for acquiring a line of memory associated with the target memory location, storing the line of acquired memory in the cache, and if the line of acquired memory has been evicted, re-acquiring the line of memory in response to the atomic instruction being ready to write data to the cache and re-acquiring the evicted line of memory a predetermined limited number of times before the atomic instruction becomes the oldest instruction stored in the queue.

A method, comprising:

• acquiring a line of memory associated with a target memory location for an instruction in a queue, and storing the line of acquired memory in a cache;
• and
• if the line of acquired memory has been evicted, preventing the evicted line of memory from being re-acquired until the instruction is the oldest instruction in the queue unless the evicted line of memory has been re-acquired less than a predetermined number of times.
