System and method for providing definitions

A non-transitory computer-readable memory device storing instructions, the instructions comprising:

• one or more instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
• receive a search query that includes:
• a first character string, and
• a second character string indicating that the search query is a request for definitions of the first character string;
• identify a plurality of web pages that are associated with a plurality of domains and are relevant to the search query,
• the plurality of web pages including the definitions of the first character string, and
• the definitions being ordered based on an order associated with the plurality of web pages;
• and
• provide information associated with one or more of the ordered definitions and information identifying one or more of the plurality of web pages.

A method comprising:

• receiving, by one or more processors, a search query that is a request for definitions of a character string;
• identifying, by the one or more processors and based on the search query, a plurality of web pages that are associated with a plurality of domains and are relevant to the search query,
• the plurality of web pages including the definitions of the character string, and
• the definitions being ranked based on an order associated with the plurality of web pages;
• forming, by the one or more processors, a search results document that includes information associated with the definitions and information identifying one or more of the plurality of web pages;
• and
• outputting, by the one or more processors, the search results document.
