Near-field transducers for focusing light

An apparatus comprising:

• a waveguide that extends proximate to an air-bearing surface of a magnetic recording head;
• a near-field transducer capable of receiving light from the waveguide, the near-field transducer comprising:
• a metallic disc having a first edge that faces the air-bearing surface and a second edge facing away from the air-bearing surface;
• a metallic peg disposed on the first edge of the metallic disc;
• and
• a series of rings disposed on the second edge of the metallic disc, the series of rings alternating between a dielectric material and a metallic material, wherein a first ring of the series of rings is proximate the second edge of the metallic disc, the first ring comprising the dielectric material.

An apparatus comprising:

• a near-field transducer positioned to receive light from a waveguide, the near-field transducer comprising:
• a metallic disc having a peg extending from a first edge;
• a first dielectric region around a second edge of the metallic disc, the second edge being opposed to the first edge;
• a first metallic region around an outer edge of the first dielectric region, the outer edge facing away from the metallic disc;
• and
• a trapezoidal region of a metallic material extending from the second edge of the metallic disc to beyond the first metallic region, the trapezoidal region replacing portions of the first dielectric region with the metallic material.
