Abstract
Saccharification of polysaccharides of plants is provided, where release of fermentable sugars from cellulose is obtained by adding plant tissue composition. Production of glucose is obtained without the need to add additional β-glucosidase. Adding plant tissue composition to a process using a cellulose degrading composition to degrade cellulose results in an increase in the production of fermentable sugars compared to a process in which plant tissue composition is not added. Using plant tissue composition in a process using a cellulose degrading enzyme composition to degrade cellulose results in decrease in the amount of cellulose degrading enzyme composition or exogenously applied cellulase required to produce fermentable sugars.
Claims20
A method of reducing protein load in a fermentable sugar producing process, the method comprising,
- (a) providing a cellulosic biomass comprising cellulose;
- (b) providing a protein load comprising an exogenous cellulose degrading composition comprising at least one exogenous enzyme, said composition capable of converting a first amount of cellulose to a first amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours after contact of said cellulose with said cellulose degrading composition;
- (c) providing a plant tissue composition, wherein any endogenous enzymes in said plant tissue composition are capable of converting said first amount of cellulose to a second amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours after contacting said cellulose with said plant tissue composition;
- and
- (d) contacting said cellulosic biomass, said cellulose degrading composition and said plant tissue composition and producing a third amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours that is greater than the total of said first amount of fermentable sugar and said second amount of fermentable sugar.
A method of reducing protein load in a fermentable sugar producing process, the method comprising,
- (a) providing a cellulosic biomass comprising cellulose;
- (b) providing a protein load comprising a first amount of an exogenous cellulose degrading composition comprising enzymes (1) β-D glucosidase and/or (2) exo-β-1,4-glucanase or (3) endo-β-1,4-glucanase, each enzyme provided at a first amount, said composition capable of converting a first amount of cellulose to a first amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours after contact of said cellulose with said exogenous cellulose degrading composition;
- (c) said protein load and said first amount of fermentable sugars selected from:
- (i) a protein load wherein the amount of said at least one exogenous enzyme of (1), (2) or (3) or combination thereof is reduced by at least 25% compared to said first amount of said enzyme and producing a first amount of fermentable sugar;
- or
- (ii) a protein load wherein the amount of said cellulose degrading enzyme composition is reduced by at least 25% compared to said first amount of cellulose degrading enzyme and producing a first amount of fermentable sugar;
- or
- (iii) a protein load wherein said exo-β-1,4-glucanase is excluded in said cellulose degrading composition and producing a first amount of fermentable sugar;
- or
- (iv) a protein load wherein said β-D glucosidase is excluded in said cellulose degrading composition and producing a first amount of fermentable sugar;
- (d) providing a plant tissue composition selected from corn, oats, lentils, rice, soybean, sunflower, wheat or quinoa, wherein any endogenous enzymes in said plant tissue are capable of converting said first amount of cellulose to a second amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours after contacting said cellulose with said plant tissue composition;
- and
- (e) contacting said cellulosic biomass, said exogenous cellulose degrading composition and said plant tissue composition and producing a third amount of fermentable sugar within 72 hours that is greater than the total of said first amount of fermentable sugar and said second amount of fermentable sugar.
A method of reducing protein load in a fermentable sugar producing process, the method comprising,
