Para-xylylene based microfilm elution devices

A stand-alone controlled elution device comprised of:

• A. a reservoir that is comprised of at least one therapeutic and
• B. a microfilm that is porous that encapsulates the reservoir where the microfilm is selected from the group consisting of:
• (i) microfilms that are comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and (ii) microfilms that are a multilayer laminate of a plurality of layers of para-xylylene polymer that is endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units,
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene is derivatized with the functional group —COOH and
• where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH and
• C. one or more additional bilayers in an overlying arrangement comprised of:
• i. a reservoir that is comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about an underlying microfilm and
• ii. a microfilm that is porous comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units that is disposed about said underlying reservoir, where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene is derivatized with the functional group —COOH and where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH.

A controlled elution device capable of mounting on a medical device comprised of:

• A. a base;
• B. a reservoir that is comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about the base and
• C. a microfilm comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units disposed about the reservoir, where the microfilm is selected from the group consisting of:
• (i) microfilms that are comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and (ii) microfilms that are a multilayer laminate of a plurality of layers of para-xylylene polymer that is endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units, and where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH.

A stand-alone capable controlled elution device comprised of:

• A. a first bilayer comprised of:
• i. a microfilm base and
• ii. a reservoir that is comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about the microfilm base;
• B. one or more additional bilayers in an overlying arrangement comprised of:
• i. a microfilm that is porous that is disposed about an underlying reservoir and
• ii. a reservoir that is comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about an underlying microfilm,
• where at least one of the microfilms is selected from the group consisting of:
• (i) microfilms that are comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and (ii) microfilms that are a multilayer laminate of a plurality of layers of para-xylylene polymer that is endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units,
• where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH.

A stand-alone capable controlled elution device comprised of:

• A. a microfilm base having a first side and a second side;
• B. a first reservoir comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about said first side of the microfilm base (40);
• C. a second reservoir comprised of at least one therapeutic disposed about said second side of the microfilm base (40);
• D. a first microfilm that is porous that disposed about said first reservoir that is selected from the group consisting of:
• (i) microfilms that are comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and (ii) microfilms that are a multilayer laminate of a plurality of layers of para-xylylene polymer that is endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units,
• where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH and
• E. a second microfilm that is porous that disposed about said second reservoir that is selected from the group consisting of:
• (i) microfilms that are comprised of para-xylylene polymer endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and (ii) microfilms that are a multilayer laminate of a plurality of layers of para-xylylene polymer that is endowed with oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units,
• where there is a plurality of oxidatively functionalized para-xylene units and
• where the oxidatively functionalized para-xylene unit is a ring opened monomer derivatized with the functional group —COOH.
