Abstract
An orthosis for supination and/or pronation of a forearm of a wearer, the orthosis including a base, an upper arm support coupled to the base and configured to secure an upper arm of the wearer, a rotation assembly coupled to the base and including an output member rotatable relative to the base within a rotation plane, and a forearm support member coupled to the output member of the rotation assembly and configured to releasably engage a wrist and the forearm of the wearer.
Claims22
An orthosis for supination and/or pronation of a forearm of a wearer, the orthosis comprising:
- a base;
- an upper arm support coupled to the base and configured to secure an upper arm of the wearer;
- a rotation assembly coupled to the base and including an output member rotatable relative to the base within a rotational plane;
- a forearm support member coupled to the output member of the rotation assembly, wherein the forearm support member has a contour sized to receive a thumb of the wearer and positioned such that the forearm support is configured to substantially align a styloid process of the wearer with the rotation& plane of the rotation assembly;
- and
- wherein the rotational plane of the rotation assembly bisects a central axis, of the rotation assembly, at a point proximate said output member such that the rotational plane of the rotation assembly passes perpendicularly through said output member relative to said central axis.
An orthosis for supination and/or pronation of a forearm of a wearer, the orthosis comprising:
- a base;
- an upper arm support coupled to the base and configured to engage an upper arm of the wearer;
- a rotation assembly coupled to the base and including an output member rotatable relative to the base within a rotational plane;
- a forearm support member coupled to the output member of the rotation assembly, wherein the forearm support member has a contour sized to receive a thumb of the wearer and positioned such that the forearm support is configured to substantially align a styloid process of the wearer with the rotational plane of the rotation assembly;
- and
- wherein said output member comprises an arcuate array of gear teeth, said arcuate array of gear teeth defining said rotational plane perpendicular relative to a central axis of a rotation assembly.
A method of using an orthosis for supination and/or pronation of a forearm of a wearer, the method comprising:
- coupling an upper arm of the wearer to the orthosis;
- and
- coupling a wrist and the forearm of the wearer to a forearm support member of the orthosis such that a styloid process of the wearer is substantially aligned with a rotational plane of a rotation assembly and a base of a thumb of the wearer is distal to the rotational plate of the rotation assembly, wherein said rotational plane of the rotation assembly bisects a central axis, of the rotation assembly, at a point proximate said output member such that the rotational plane of the rotation assembly passes perpendicularly through said output member relative to said central axis.
A method of using an orthosis for supination and/or pronation of a forearm of a wearer, the method comprising:
- coupling an upper arm of the wearer to the orthosis;
- coupling a wrist and the forearm of the wearer to a forearm support member of the orthosis such that a styloid process of the wearer is substantially aligned with a rotational plane of a rotation assembly and a base of a thumb of the wearer is distal to the rotational plate of the rotation assembly, wherein the rotation assembly includes an arcuate array of gear teeth defining said rotational plane perpendicular relative to a central axis of the rotation assembly;
- and
- initiating a rotation assembly to rotate the wrist of the wearer.
