Abstract
A modular compressor assembly comprises a common motor assembly, an impeller, a blower housing and an engagement mechanism. The common motor assembly includes a stator housing containing a stator assembly and having a rotor magnet rotatably disposed therewithin. The impeller is mounted to and rotatable with the rotor magnet. The blower housing is selectable from among a plurality of blower housings each having a different cross-sectional geometry. The engagement mechanism is formed on the stator housing and/or the blower housing and allows interchangeable mounting of different blower housing configurations to the common motor assembly in order to achieve varying flow characteristics of the compressor assembly.
Claims8
An air compressor comprising:
- a lower blower housing comprising a central portion having a cylindrical outer wall, a cylindrical inner wall, and an annular groove formed in the inner wall;
- a motor disposed within the central portion of the lower blower housing, the motor comprising:
- a stator housing having a cylindrical outer wall and a locating ring having a rectangular cross-section extending about at least a portion of a circumference of the outer wall, wherein the outer wall of the stator comprises an outer wall cross-sectional profile that is complementary to, and follows contours of an inner wall cross-sectional profile of, the inner wall of the lower blower housing and the locating ring is complementary to, received within, and has a substantially similar width as the annular groove so as to locate the motor within the lower blower housing;
- and
- a rotor disposed within and rotatably coupled to the stator housing;
- an upper blower housing coupled to the lower blower housing thereby forming an annular chamber;
- and
- an air impeller fixedly coupled to the rotor and disposed within the annular chamber, the impeller having a conical ramp portion extending downward, a plurality of vanes extending upward from the ramp portion, and a lip portion extending downward from the ramp portion, the lip portion having a cylindrical outer surface that is generally flush with the outer wall of the central portion of the lower blower housing.
