Abstract
A rifle with an upper receiver and a barrel attached to the upper receiver and including a bolt carrier, and operating, buffer, and cooling systems. The operating system includes a cylinder and a piston coupled to receive propelling gases from the barrel. As the piston moves between retracted and extended positions the bolt carrier is moved between closed and open positions. The bolt carrier includes a weight movable within a guide frame between rearward and forward limits. The buffer system includes a compression spring in a tube attached to the upper receiver in abutting engagement with the bolt carrier. A partially fluid filled cylinder is attached to a coil of the spring and includes a piston and shaft. The piston is formed so that fluid in the cylinder restricts movement in one direction and allows free movement in a second direction.
Claims17
An upper receiver/integrally formed handguard assembly comprising:
- a receiver portion, where the receiver portion includes a barrel receptacle;
- an integrally formed handguard portion having a front end and a rear end;
- a first channel configured to allow passage of an operating system, and a second channel configured to allow passage of a barrel, the second channel adjacent to the first channel, where a portion of the second channel intersects with a portion of the first channel, where the first channel and the second channel forms a combined channel, where the combined channel is configured to provide clearance for the barrel to be inserted through the front end of the integrally formed handguard portion to engage the barrel receptacle of the receiver portion;
- and
- an extension rail overlying and adjacent to the second channel, extending beyond the first channel and overlying and engaging at least a portion of the receiver portion.
A handguard assembly comprising:
- a handguard, where the handguard includes a first channel and a second channel, where the first channel is configured to allow passage of an operating system, and the second channel is configured to allow passage of a barrel, the second channel is adjacent to the first channel, where a portion of the second channel intersects with a portion of the first channel, where the handguard includes an extension rail, where the extension rail overlies and is adjacent to the second channel, where a portion of the extension rail extends beyond the first channel, where the extension rail is configured to overlie and engage at least a portion of an upper receiver, where a portion of the second channel is configured to engage a surface of an attachment to a barrel.
A rifle comprising:
- a barrel;
- a barrel nut;
- a bolt carrier;
- an upper receiver;
- and
- a handguard, where the handguard includes a first channel and a second channel, where the first channel is configured to allow passage of an operating system, and the second channel is configured to allow passage of a barrel, the second channel is adjacent to the first channel, where a portion of the second channel intersects with a portion of the first channel, where the handguard includes an extension rail, where the extension rail overlies and is adjacent to the second channel, where a portion of the extension rail extends beyond the first channel, where the extension rail is configured to engage at least a portion of the upper receiver, where a portion of the second channel is configured to engage a surface of an attachment to a barrel.
