Abstract
An asphalt binder includes asphalt and an asphalt binder modifier, which includes bio-oil. The asphalt binder can include a carboxyl additive. The asphalt can optionally include polymer-modified asphalt. An asphalt material includes mineral aggregate, an asphalt material binder including asphalt, and an asphalt binder modifier including bio-oil. A method for making the asphalt binder is disclosed. The asphalt material includes asphalt pavement and roofing shingles. The asphalt binder can be emulsified with water and a surfactant for use as a weatherproofing sealant or as an adhesive.
Claims45
An asphalt material comprising:
- a mineral aggregate,
- an asphalt material binder comprising asphalt, and
- an asphalt binder modifier comprising a bio-oil fraction having a water content of less than 4% by weight, wherein the asphalt binder modifier comprises up to 40% by weight bio-oil fraction.
An asphalt binder comprising:
- asphalt and
- an asphalt modifier comprising a bio-oil fraction having a water content of less than 4% by weight, wherein the asphalt modifier comprises up to 40% by weight bio-oil fraction.
A method for the production of an asphalt binder comprising:
- a) combining asphalt with a bio-oil, the bio-oil having a water content of less than 8% by weight;
- b) heating the combination at a temperature of from about 120° C. to about 170° C.;
- and
- c) mixing the combination until a homogeneous mixture is obtained, wherein the asphalt binder comprises up to 40% by weight bio-oil.
