Abstract
A device may include a hollow needle, a dilator mounted coaxially on the needle, and a sheath mounted coaxially on the dilator. The dilator may be slideably displaceable relative to the sheath.
Claims22
A method of accessing a body space comprising:
- inserting at least a portion of an access device comprising a needle section, a dilator section, and a sheath section into a body cavity;
- receiving a body fluid flowing into a space in the access device through the needle section, the space being defined external from the needle section;
- venting gas from the space and out of the access device but inhibiting the egress of the body fluid from the space through at least one passage defined by the access device external from the needle section;
- visually confirming the presence of the body fluid in the space from outside the access device;
- advancing a guidewire through the access device after the step of visually confirming;
- advancing the dilator section into the body cavity, over the guidewire;
- and
- advancing the sheath section into the body cavity, over the dilator.

A method of accessing a body space comprising:
- introducing the distal tip of a needle section of an access device into a cavity, wherein the access device comprises a dilator and a sheath;
- receiving a fluid flowing through the distal tip of the needle section from the cavity into a space located internal of the sheath of the access device and external from the needle section;
- venting a gas in the space out of the access device through at least one passage external from the needle section while hindering the fluid from escaping through the passage;
- advancing a guidewire through the distal tip of the needle section into the cavity;
- advancing the dilator over the needle section into the cavity;
- advancing the sheath over the dilator into the cavity;
- and
- removing the guidewire, dilator, and the needle section, thereby leaving the sheath in place to provide access to the cavity.
5 more elements
A method of accessing a body space comprising:
- inserting at least a portion of an access device into a cavity, the access device comprising a dilator section and a sheath section;
- receiving a fluid from the cavity into a space within the access device via a first passageway;
- facilitating the reception of the fluid into the space by venting a gas within the space through a passageway, to escape to the atmosphere;
- hindering the escape of the fluid from the space to the atmosphere;
- advancing a guidewire into the cavity through the access device after receiving the fluid from the cavity into the space;
- advancing the dilator section into the cavity, over the guidewire;
- and
- advancing the sheath section into the cavity, over the dilator.
