Abstract
A patient support incorporates a lying surface and at least one siderail on at least one side of the support. The siderails are operable between a raised position, an intermediate position, and a lowered position. The siderails are biased along a first range of motion by a first biasing member, and are biased along a second range of motion by a second biasing member. In the intermediate position, the siderails may define a gap through which a patient can ingress or egress the bed. In the raised and intermediate positions, the siderails may define gaps between each other and/or between the siderails and a headboard and footboard, that are sufficiently small to prevent accidental egress, and sufficiently large to prevent pinching and entrapment.
Claims21
A side rail for a patient support, said side rail comprising:
- a side rail body being movable between a first position, a second position, and a third position between said first position and said second position;
- a first biasing element adapted to apply a biasing force to urge said side rail body in a first direction through a first range of motion;
- and
- a second biasing element adapted to apply a biasing force to urge said side rail body in a second direction opposed from said first direction through a second range of motion wherein said biasing force of said first biasing element is no longer applied over at least a portion of said second range of motion.
A side rail for a patient support, said side rail comprising:
- a side rail body being movable between a first position, a second position, and a third position between said first position and said second position;
- a first biasing element adapted to urge said side rail body through a first range of motion;
- a second biasing element adapted to urge said side rail body through a second range of motion;
- and
- a pivot arm, said pivot arm defining a first portion being pivotally attached to said first biasing element, and a second portion being coupled to said side rail body, said pivot arm being adapted to couple a biasing force of said first biasing element with said side rail body when said side rail body is between said second position and said third position, and to decouple the biasing force of said first biasing element when said side rail body is between said first position and said third position.
A side rail for a patient support, said side rail comprising:
- a side rail body being movable between a first position, a second position, and a third position between said first position and said second position;
- a first biasing element configured to apply a biasing force to urge said side rail body in a first direction through a first range of motion;
- and
- a second biasing element configured to apply a biasing force to urge said side rail body in a second direction through a second range of motion and said biasing force of said first biasing element being decoupled over at least a portion of the second range of motion.
A side rail for a patient support, said side rail comprising:
- a side rail body being movable between a first position, a second position, and a third position between said first position and said second position;
- a base for movably supporting said side rail body, said base configured to be coupled to a patient support;
- a pair of side rail arms, each having respective first and second portions, said side rail arms being pivotably coupled at their first portions to said side rail body via respective pivot shafts, and said side rail arms being pivotably coupled at said second portions between said side rail body and said base;
- a pair of shafts, each of said shafts being non-rotatably coupled to a respective one of said side rail arms at said second portions thereof, and each of said shafts being rotatably supported by said base;
- a first biasing element coupled to at least one of said side rail arms and configured to urge said side rail body in a first direction through a first range of motion;
- a second biasing element coupled to at least one of said side rail arms and configured to urge said side rail body in a second direction through a second range of motion;
- wherein said side rail arms each comprises a respective third portion spaced from said first and second portions, and said side rail further comprises a link pivotably coupled to each of said side rail arms at said respective third portions for synchronizing the movement of said side rail arms;
- and
- a pivot arm, said pivot arm defining a first portion coupled to said first biasing element and a second portion coupled to said side rail body via one of said shafts and one of said side rail arms, said pivot arm configured to selectively couple a biasing force of said first biasing element with said side rail body when said side rail body is between said second position and said third position and configured to decouple the biasing force of said first biasing element when said side rail body is between said first position and said third position.
