Abstract
Techniques are described that can be used to enable a transfer of an operating system from one machine to another. The transfer permits the operating system to be available to the target machine at buffers that are accessible to one or more application or other logic. In some implementations, information related to an operating system migration is stored in a buffer that is accessible to an application that is to use the information and thereby avoids a copy of such information from an intermediate buffer to an application buffer.
Claims19
A method comprising:
- identifying a socket associated with a virtual operating system migration to a destination computer;
- assigning at least one buffer to store a portion of a network protocol unit carrying information associated with the virtual operating system migration, wherein the assigning comprises assigning a header buffer and a payload buffer;
- determining whether a received network protocol unit carries information for a virtual operating system migration;
- selectively transferring the received network protocol unit carrying information associated with the virtual operating system migration to the assigned at least one buffer in response to a determination that the received network protocol unit carries information for a virtual operating system migration;
- and
- selectively providing availability of a payload of the received network protocol unit directly from the assigned payload buffer, wherein contents of the assigned payload buffer are available to application logic directly from the assigned payload buffer absent copying of the contents from the assigned payload buffer to another buffer.
A computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to:
- determine a socket associated with an operating system migration from a transmitter computer;
- provide at least one buffer assignment to store a portion of a network protocol unit carrying information associated with the operating system migration, wherein the instructions to provide at least one buffer assignment comprise instructions to assign a header buffer and a payload buffer;
- determine whether the received network protocol unit includes a virtual operating system migration;
- selectively request transfer of the received network protocol unit carrying information associated with the operating system migration to the at least one assigned buffer in response to a determination that the received network protocol unit includes a virtual operating system migration, and
- selectively provide availability of a payload of the received network protocol unit directly from the assigned payload buffer, wherein contents of the assigned payload buffer are available to application logic directly from the assigned payload buffer absent copying of the contents from the assigned payload buffer to another buffer.
A system comprising:
- a host system comprising a first buffer, second buffer, and a data mover logic;
- a network component communicatively coupled to the host system, the network component comprising:
- logic to receive a socket associated with a virtual operating system migration to the host system,
- logic to receive at least one buffer assignment to store a portion of a network protocol unit carrying information associated with the virtual operating system migration, wherein the at least one buffer assignment comprises an assignment of a header buffer and a payload buffer,
- logic to determine whether the received network protocol unit is associated with a virtual operating system migration;
- logic to selectively transfer the received network protocol unit carrying information associated with the virtual operating system migration to the at least one assigned buffer in response to the determination that the received network protocol unit is associated with a virtual operating system migration, and
- logic to selectively provide availability of a payload of the received network protocol unit directly from the assigned payload buffer, wherein contents of the assigned payload buffer are available to application logic directly from the assigned payload buffer absent copying of the contents from the assigned payload buffer to another buffer;
- and
- a network medium communicatively coupled to the network component.
