Methods and compositions for generating haploid organisms are described.

A transgenic plant comprising a heterologous transgene expression cassette, the expression cassette comprising a promoter operably linked to a polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide comprising a heterologous amino acid sequence of at least 5 amino acids linked to an amino terminus of a protein comprising a CENH3 histone-fold domain, wherein the heterologous amino acid sequence is heterologous to the CENH3 histone-fold domain.
